So Momo got a little sister today. This is Yuki. c: She's a ruby-eyed albino generic fancy but she's very sweet~ She is pretty malnourished but other than that seems healthy. A week on my diet and she'll plump up~
Momo is perfectly happy around her except when they're both in the same cage. Then she gets territorial and aggressive... Hoping to fix that. For now, separate cages~

yeah. the cage is very new though. I just got it yesterday for my birthday and set it up, but momo did sleep in it for one night and the toys/bedding is still her's. Yuki doesn't seem to give a shit being in the old cage though, even though I didn't wash it of momo's scent. then again, momo is weeks older and hasn't been with other rats for three weeks.
Ahhh okay, probably cause it's her stuff then C: My older girls did that when I intro'd some youngin's in with them but the moment I pulled everything out and scrubbed them with low-allergy vanilla soap and let them dry it was fine C:
Completely up to you but I hope they get along soon! They're adorable!

Aww, so sweet ^_^ I bet they'll get along just fine after a while.
You might try letting them both run around somewhere open, like on the couch with you or something, that should let them get to know each other without so much territorial squabbling. Or maybe, if you have both cages on the same table, just leave the cages open and let them wander back and forth on their own; maybe both tricks in combination. They're going to scuffle a little bit at first but as long as no one's getting hurt it shouldn't really a problem; females tend to argue more over who's getting a bath whether they want it or not more than anything else in my experience, lol.

-w-; and now I read that you should keep them separated for 3 weeks... but... ach.
but quarantine only works if you can keep them in different rooms really. I can't do that...
I'll just watch out for sickness I guess. As for socializing, they get along out of the cage so just... that and I'll try cleaning out the cage. no blood no foul, after all. They've gotta sort their dominance hierarchy out.

Quarantine can work in the same room easily, even with the cages right next to each other, as long as one is fairly enclosed, like an aquarium. I've always used an aquarium for my quarantine cage and never had any problem. It's just preventing germ and virus contact, it doesn't have to be a hazmat station, lol.
And three weeks is ridiculous. Three *days* maybe but three weeks would only be necessary if you were sure one of them was actually ill.

yes and yes~ Momo licks my fingers out of affection, wants to be with me and sleeps on my shoulder or in my pocket. c: And their messes are usually easy to clean up.
only thing I'd caution is they can chew a lot. momo doesn't chew but others probably will. I've seen pictures of rats chewing up baseboards or furniture pretty badly... but if you keep tabs on where they are it can be avoided.

It's very helpful in determining what you need to do for them and what to expect.
I will say that they're expensive in health care. They may be cheap animals but they're not 'throw-aways'. I've already paid over 200 in supplies, cage, vet and the like.
They also have a short lifespan. Average is about two years.
despite all that, they're awesome~
