Gotta remember, MLP doesn't seem to have a 'long term' villain.
Not all of their problems are brought upon them by an antagonist; I think that's one reason lots of people like the cartoon.
Because when villains do appear, it makes it that much more interesting.

true, I'll give it that, it makes each one all the more memorable, but they are quickly out done or something by others, sometimes a villain isn't even necessary. great for a cartoon, but this is becoming a series, and a series i believe needs something solid for its movers and shakers
Consider this.
If Discord was a constant villain as opposed to occasional, the cartoon would move a little closer to one of the previous generations; a chaos born villain constantly trying to thwart harmony.
I think one of the reasons MLP:FIM rose so high above it's predecessors is because it doesn't rely on something like that. It's got many antagonists; though only a few of them are actively out to conquer Equestria or do away with harmony or whatever. If every weak Discord had another plot to do evil, well, it'd grow tired fast, I imagine.
