A quickie little full-body ref that I put together for Kes's Noctowl, Artryx.
This guy is huge. Nobody’s entirely sure why, but he’s got some sort of wonky genetics because he ended up growing up to be about 8 feet tall. Which is why he’s Kes’s main form of transportation.
Her dad put together a relatively simple saddle and harness for him to make for safer riding. Artie’s poncho functions as a saddle blanket. The saddle itself is mostly flat and made of padded leather, and Kes rides crouched low like a horse jockey to help reduce wind resistance. She keeps from falling off with a couple of leather straps that she hooks onto her belt so that they function like seat belts.
The harness is really rather simple, just straps that slip underneath and in front of Artie’s wings that are hooked together by a metal ring that sits over his breast. There’re a few saddlebags and pouches attached to the harness and saddle to carry supplies and things.
I dunno if this is how it would REALLY work in real life, but I’m taking my best guess here since nobody rides giant birds around in our universe. xD;

That's weird. I've been designing (that is randomly doodling) saddle designs for (badly drawn) eagles a few weeks ago. Very different ones of course, but to be strapped on in a very similar way.
I thought the two straps in front would be actually sewn to the ring and saddle, so that this part could be hanged around the bird's neck. The other two would then be dragged forward and strapped onto the ring, thus securing the saddle in place. I guess that's the most natural way to go, because you would want to have straps in front and behind each wing without strapping them around the wings and you wouldn't want for the saddle to fall off while you're trying to strap it on... if that makes sense.
I like the poncho. It compliments the wing shape nicely when the wings are stretched. Is it kept from flapping around while flying in any way?
The story sounds intriguing :3

Yep, that's the basic gist of the idea that I had as well. I figured that the simpler and lighter, the better for a setup to be used on a bird. Don't want anything too heavy that would weigh it down or get in the way of its movement, otherwise you're probably not even going to get off the ground. As for the poncho, the saddle itself keeps it mostly in place since it's used as a saddle blanket, and the rider probably keeps the edges down with her legs as best as she can. I doubt that there'd be any way to prevent ALL of the drag that it'd still create by flapping about the edges but I don't think it'd be toooooo much of a problem.
Thanks a bunch! It's indeed a fun little story I've come up for the bird and his rider, I've got their DA app in my gallery somewhere if you wanna check it out. Long story short, his rider's a sort of wild west-esque mail-carrier who also takes on some less savory jobs on the side.
