A coloured pencil badge for
sabredragon. Mmm, a dragon and his lovely hoard.
I really enjoyed playing withe the glistening gold and developing the shadows and highlights of the blue scales. I learned some new colour combos that look fantastic. Like usual, scans of coloured pencil never looks good. Too grainy!
Prismacolors on stonehenge paper. Thank you Sabre!

It is always such an exciting moment - like a child on Christmas Day - when a commission is finished, and a link is sitting ready to be clicked. Oftentimes I will actually close my eyes once I click it, and when I'm ready, open them quickly to be hit with it all at once. Well, when I saw this one for the first time, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor! Art this incredible leaves me in shocked silence for several moments searching for a word that can describe it. "Stunning" was the word that eventually came to mind.
It takes me pretty much the whole weekend to sweep through the Dealer's Room at a convention, visiting each unique artist's table and artworks. When I found your table at FC2012, the Dealer's Room was just closing up on the last day of the convention. Instantly I was astounded by your art talent and high level of detail and quality. The one that completely blew me away was the example of your highest-tiered commission: Prismacolours. I believe it was this one here:

It was hard to believe someone could have taken such a boring blank card, and turned it into something like this! All of the details, and the mix of colours, so meticulously created to produce something that to me looked nearly photo-realistic! This has always been my favourite anthropomorphic art style, in which the picture nearly looks like a real animal, but has that touch of anthropomorphism to hint to reveal that it is a creature of our imagination and fantasy.
I knew I was hooked, and when I had learned that you only take commission slots like this at conventions, and actually had a slot available, it was a "take my money" moment for sure! The year-long quote did not phase me either, as I was perfectly willing to wait as long as it took to get a depiction of my character even close to your example! To be honest, I thought such quality would be hard to reproduce often. I thought it would be kinda like seeing the pictures of the perfect burgers at the fast food joint, and then the actual product (although still tasty, and addictive, and good!) wouldn't quite look like the picture. I guess my excitement was trimmed back with a healthy dose of cautious optimism.
But you certainly proved me wrong in the best way! I'm sure you'll be happy to know that your final result greatly exceeded my expectations! You have brought my character to life in a most remarkable way! This creation has received the "WOW!" factor from every single person I have shown it to, furry and non-furry alike!
I'm very glad I gave you the creative freedom to pick the pose, given my character's written description and a few other bust references. I was looking for something unique - something I hadn't had before. You cleverly came up with the idea of my character holding a pile of gold from his hoard, staring at it with a fixated reverence. It sounded like the perfect idea to depict a dragon's intense gold lust!
I absolutely LOVE the facial expression you've given him! His excited visible eye and adorable goofy grin as the stares transfixed on the beautiful metal makes him look very seduced! Gollum's hiss of "My preciousssss" comes to mind! XD
It's cute the way you have positioned his paws as he is cupping the mound, ensuring it doesn't spill or topple over. The rest of the anatomy looks superb as well, from his posture and body language, to the shape of his head and strong neck. I love how much depth perception you were able to bring out! Your sense of highlighting and shadowing to represent this guides the viewer's eyes right in!
I like the way you did the lettering of his name as well when it comes to the font choice and colour choice! It boldly stands out against the background, and despite using many of the bright colours of the subject, it does not clash with anything and is easy to read.
As aforementioned, the astonishing level of detail you were able to represent on a small 4x3 card such as this is something to behold! It's hard to believe that it gets even better than this when viewed in person, instead of a digital scan which doesn't pick up all the textures. I can't believe how many different shades of blue, yellow, orange, black, etc you were able to bring out! The bright, lustrous gold glistening off Sabre's scales looks so convincing! I love how there are even shades of green in some areas! I'm also amazed by how realistic-looking his leather collar is, with its shiny buckles reflecting the goldlight!
What a privilege it has been to be able to get artwork of my character created by an artist of your caliber. Traditional art talent this great is rare. Detail this high seems like it must have been tedious to do, and must have taken forever! I really hope you had fun while creating it. Thanks so much for working so hard on it! I absolutely love it!!
It was a pleasure working with you! ^.=.^
