imagine this: you are playing outside with your favorite toy. suddenly you throw it and it finds its way inside a window. this window leads to the basement. you go open the door to the basement, turn on the single light bulb, and make your way slowly down the stairs. you move slowly because that light bulb doesn't fully illuminate the whole basement. you can barely make out the furniture and trinkets that lie in the darkness. and that feeling , of not knowing what lies beyond, stops your descend. you question if you should keep going. your instincts tell you this is not a safe place. fear creeps in.
you can see your toy, on the floor. is not far away. your instinct get overpowered by your desire and you continue down. you make sure not to touch anything else, its dusty and cover in spiderweb. you're at the bottom, about to pick your toy and suddenly...that feeling. something in the dark is watching me.
you grab your toy and start running! fear and panic propel you out. you run and every step of the way out, you can feel as if something is right behind you. right behind you , and getting closer. you can feel it near your neck. YOUR'E OUT! slam the door shut. trembling, you swear to never ever go down there ever again.
and that's my childhood terror. this was done for the scare stiff contest at DA, and i don't normally don't do contest but the moment i read the description for it, an image pop in my head. so i was like "well why not". its very rare that i get an exact image of what i want in my head, but this one just solidified rather quickly. and im double impressed in that it basically came out just like i picture it in my head.
i would say that the fear image is the enviroment itself.
also: when you see it you'll sh!@# bricks!!

Perfect setup. One glimpse and you knew what this image wants to convey.
That the only colorful thing is the plane, gives this even more emphasis on how vague and scary everything else must be.
Although, I am thinking the hands might be a bit too much.
Love your composition of the scene - it surely does not miss its effect.

I would say this is a great contender for that contest.
I think for all of us our childhood was like that in situations similar.
My shit bricks moment is not the hands exactly (the hands being the imagined thing that lurks for the kid), but the doll on the right, and the realization that it looks like his hand is on the dolls shoulder...
For me as a kid, seeing the doll would be my focus point on the scary. Here, its the unknown (hands creature) that will make that lifeless doll become real.
My grandmother kept these huge old dolls, I mean, ones like from the 40's in a spare bedroom at my grandparents place. When we would visit for a few days, me and my bro had to sleep in this spare bedroom and these dolls, about 4, where around the room. I would take extra blankets and pillows and cover their faces before I could even imagine to shut my eyes and sleep.
Awesome job 8-)

Great use of color! I also have to say that the way you drew it leads the viewer in perfectly. The piece would be less powerful if it led the viewer to the hands first, but it leads to the plane, then the boy, then you see the hands while looking at the rest of the picture.
