I think he got ar'ed because the sprite wasn't up to working on an older human, but she could give this lost one a new chance at life by a sort of rebirth. The regression helped with development and such, and bringing some parts of the mind back to a more innocent state. Even with old memories, just being able to play safe and carefree would be a comfort.
