CLASSICAL MONTH 4/4 In Praise of Songs that Die - Jake Heggi
Here is the most modern piece of classical music I've ever performed, both chronologically (written at the turn of the century) and stylistically.
This one you might not like. It's a bit more difficult for the listener than most vocal music, and I LOVE it because of that. The intervals are so fun to sing. I love the melodic structure and how the piano interplays with the voice.
Things to listen for:
1. Very contemporary feel.
2. Swirling piano (love my accompanist)
3. END of classical month :3
Lyrics:
Ah, they are passing, passing by,
Wonderful songs, but born to die!
Cries from the infinite human seas,
Waves thrice-winged with harmonies.
Here I stand on a pier in the foam
Seeing the songs to the beach go home,
Dying in sand while the tide flows back,
As it flowed of old in its fated track.
Oh, hurrying tide that will not hear
Your own foam children dying near
Is there no refuge-house of song,
No home, no haven where songs belong?
Oh, precious hymns that come and go!
You perish, and I love you so!
THIS hereby concluded classical month. Like it?
I can't believe I actually kept with it for 4 weeks X3

Very interesting! I like it. This is the first of your classical songs I have listened to, and I believe you have caught the feeling and style near perfect! As classical songs are more about the complexity and form of the music, rather than making the most comfortable sound.
THIS is a poor example of classical music X3
It's classical style (in that it's written down, and sung in that kind of way) but it's very new, which soundsl iike a paradox because it is.
This one's challenging for the performer and listeners, but I just effin' love it. It's like the metal of classical music.

I can hear the enthusiasm here! I think your voice is particularly suited for this kind of music, I love the clarity you give the to the pronunciation - each syllable is marked and confident. And the piano accompaniment is fantastic, almost dizzying! One thing though, I think the change at 1:39 should be a little more dramatic, more like a whisper over a more languid background in contrast to the other sections. A little like (and this is a bit of an extreme example) Butterworth's 'Is my team ploughing' from A Shropshire Lad, if you can find a good recording! I hope that makes sense, but regardless, you performed it wonderfully and introduced me to a new composer, hurray!
Surprisingly, I actually KNOW that song haha.
My teacher doesn't like me altering my style that much. I enjoy going from whisper to full resonance, and yeah I agree with that choice stylistically.
I do my best to spit out those words. I want people to at least have a CHANCE at getting what I'm trying to say.
Thank you very much for listening ^^

Well, one of the things many of my teachers always said is to forget everything your teachers say about interpretation, unless you agree with it, haha! thetrick is in having the technical ability to do anything one's mind desires. Still, that won't let you pass an exam in some places.
Thank you for posting it! =D
