Just some practice on scales with the use of a very close up cropped photo of an Iguana. The top left is the original, I then turned it greyscale, messed with the levels and recoloured it with multiply layers.
Same as the fur, but of a hit and miss. I like the brownish green one, but the red one is a bit too...vibrant? Idk, it just seems to lose the texture or something.

I agree that the brown and green one is pretty awesome I also LOVE the color combo of the original<3 iridescent <3. The red one is actually pretty good too, probably seems too bright because there is no definitive shadow direction and what I've found with scales is shading/shadows is key. That and you could try using dull shades of red except for the lightest parts, then do hints of vibrant red so they balance each other out. reddish purples and maroons make great shades for reds. (only reason I know this is my biggest client is a big red lizard hahaha I used to be terrible at red scales now it's all I can do! :P)
Scales are a pain though and you did an awesome job You should be uber proud <3

Thanks :D Yeah I think it's just cause I slapped the colour on without editing the scales. It was a semi experiment cause I wondered if maybe I should try greyscale paintings and then colour them. But it doesn't always turn out the way I want and it can be hit and miss with getting the colour right. It's probably more fiddly than just starting with the correct colours.
I think the greyscale paintings with color is a great idea! Just keep in mind when you're doing them that grey doesn't always have to be grey. ;) It's easy to lock the transparency and paint the lines and shading a different color, or just use overlays. It'll help a lot in getting the "color right" in my opinion!
When I use grey scale I'll usually just get the base colors down and then do detail work on top of that. Grey scale can be very very nice when you have a character with crazy colors. That and with grey scale you can pinpoint exactly were you want your lighting. I really would like to do more strictly black and white pictures because it improves your lighting skills a ton. At least that's what I've been told haha
and you know what they say practice makes perfect <3

The fur ones looked really good!
With these ones, I'd probably have not gone with such a dark black for the scale outlines. Change it up with each color so you get it more uniform.
On the red, maybe try an overlay layer of darker red instead for a base and then brighter red airbrushed on each scale. It'll help blend them a bit better instead of just being a bright orange red over black outline. Might not hide the texture as bad.
The dark green on the bottom left is excellent. ^^ I like the different colors in it and the different values of green [darker and lighter mottling]. Come to think of it, you could do some purple mottling in the red scales if you wanted, and change the highlights from white to gold.

lol it was literally that black http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5288/.....080891d0_z.jpg I made the image heaps HEAPS larger and cropped it to a small section.
Here is another example of Iguana scales http://www.pbase.com/jet2176/image/.....5326/large.jpg I think it's just their skin colour or something idk XD
and cool thanks :D
