Just to be clear, based on other signs we saw, I believe this sign is nailed to the tree at the top and bottom and then the shell fungus grew over those parts. Some signs had shell fungus only at the top or bottom and some had none at all. They were obviously quite old.

Aye, and that's what it looked like at first. Actually, at first we thought the shell fungus was part of the tree and somehow the tree was growing around the sign.
