Interesting point of fact as to why a bag of crisps/chips has so much air in it. They leave that much space to prevent breakage during shipping, it almost makes you feel better about opening the bag and finding it's only a third full.

why are there crumbs in the bottom of my bag of air?

truth is though, they do that to protect the chips. an airtight, partially 'inflated' bag will resist a bit of pressure and less chips will break if somthing is placed on top of the bag.
