Thomas is based on a real loco. Built for the LBSC (London Brighton South Coast railway) & was called an E2. Only differences are the lower bunker area & the front splasher (which is absent on the real loco)
Southern Railway E2
Unfortunately, all these locomotives were withdrawn by 1963 & out of the 10 strong fleet, none survived.
They were used for yard duties like shunting empty coaches & what not because they had a poor coal capacity. They were tried out on push-pull duties but these were abandoned. They replaced the more powerful Maunsell Z Class during WW2 at hither green. The E2 class members at South Hampton docks were replaced by Class 07 shunters (why you never see Thomas call Salty an arsehole I'll never know)
