Thanks!
Really, it's as much a matter of what I choose to marinate in 'em as anything else, you know? Tarot cards, you dump in a few keywords for the meaning, add a few requirements (must have X of the suit symbol somehow, etc), turn up the heat, let it simmer for about a half hour and it's ready to go.

It seems like an imposing project until you have the skills to go from sketch to finished image in under a day. Then it's just moderately large. And it makes you stretch to draw shit you'd never draw normally, whether you reinterpret from scratch like I am, or just impose your own theme or rendering style on the Smith-Waite imagery!
Was this a deck per student, or a deck made by the entire class with 3-4 cards per student? The latter seems a lot more possible at the level of mastery most college students have.

Definitely the latter. It would take more than a semester to create a whole deck, especially at college-level.
The re-interpretation of each card is the allure, I think. It's exactly as you stated; a large-scale project that is pre-themed and open to stylistic interpretation and each presents challenges. The growth that comes from a project like this is highly enticing. But few have the drive to complete such a task without benefit of a paycheck as motivation.
I'll have to dig-up my cards... I need some comic relief! ^___^
