Chapter 1- The Alchemist
Alright Chapter one is live. Once again I would love feedback, any constructive criticism, and any Ideas for the future.
========================================================
Where am I? That’s what I thought when I first came to. I remember falling through the... what would you call that thing anyway? The void? Let’s go with that for now. I tried to move but found myself unable to do so. I tried looking around and I noticed that just like the void everything was white. However everything was shinier. And I could make out different shades of white, in different shapes. After adjusting to all the white, I could make out a few things. A table a few feet away with a sheet pulled over it, it seemed to bulge as if the sheet were covering something on the table. I also noticed the roof was silver. I turned to my left and spotted something not white, but brown. A clipboard! It seemed so big, bigger than any I had ever seen before. I couldn’t read the text on the board, it was in some language I had never seen before. Curious thing is, it is eye level with me. I also noticed what appeared to be an edge right after it. So apparently I am sitting on a table. But how big is this table? It looks huge! I kept looking around and finally noticed something behind me. It was a label, a scrap of tape stuck to the side of a jar, and it had more of that alien writing on it. That’s when it struck me.
I’m inside the jar.
I’m not quite sure what this means, am I to be some kind of test subject? Or an experiment on humans? Is that to be my punishment for destroying earth? I decided not to dwell on these thoughts for too long, and instead focused on searching the room for a way out.
I noticed that in the real roof of the room there was a big glass dome, behind the dome were rows and rows of chairs. I came to the conclusion that this is an operation theater. I also noticed what I could only guess to be a door, a slight crack of black in a rectangular outline on the otherwise white walls.
It was at this point I heard a noise. A Click, whirl, and then silence.
Quickly turning I saw what had made the noise, the table with the sheet over it was now missing it’s sheet. On it I saw some kind of a creature. I could only see the left half and bits of the right, but I remember what I saw.
It was yellow, with white for a belly, and had blue eyes, I noticed it had a tail that hat a white tip. It was roughly humanesque, in that it appeared to have two arm and two legs and could be considered bipedal. It’s head had big pointed ears on the top, it reminded me of a fox, and I also noticed a wing that looked more reptilian than mammalian on it’s back. It’s “hand” was very round and looked more like a paw, but I was able to see what appeared to be an opposable thumb. The table it had been on elevated it to an angle that reminded me of the scene from Star Wars where Darth Vader first awoke. The table then began to rotate so that the body was pointed right at me, and then I saw the right half. Unlike the left half, the right wasn’t fur and flesh, it was machinery, robotics of the highest degree. It was obviously unfinished, otherwise all would look like one of the two halfs. The robotic half showed that the wings, ears, eyes, and just about everything was mechanical. There was one feature that stood out though. The paw was slightly bigger proportionally to the rest of the body, as was the other one. I kept staring at it until I noticed the paw had a circle on the back of it. Normally I wouldn’t pay attention to that, but I did. It reminded me of the device. I tried to raise my hands or to look down, but I saw nothing below me, I couldn’t raise my hands, and I was stuck in a jar.
That’s when I heard another sound. A whirl.
Turning to the direction the sound came from I saw another creature enter. It was some kind of humanoid squirrel of an alien race I would later come to know as the furries. He had red fur and a bushy tail, he wore glasses and a big lab coat. This furry came over to the robot and smiled, knowing something I did not. He then proceeded up to me and put his face right next to the glass and said something in a language I could not understand. He then left the room.
Time passed, and I waited there staring at the robot trying to figure out how it works, or find some way to escape. A few hours passed, at least that’s what it felt like, and I heard something. I looked up and behind the glass I saw movement. Dozens of spectators gathered around to watch the show. I heard that whirl again, and knew that whatever was about to happen was going to change my life forever.
The squirrel entered again, this time accompanied by what looked to be a bear of some calibur. The bear was brown, and the same size as the squirrel , it also wore a lab coat, but had no other distinguishable features. The squirrel proceeded to talk to the audience in more of their language, while the bear started placing more fur onto the robot. The fur seemed to dissolve into the other fur and would not separate, as if it had always been there. The squirrel then came over to me, he picked up the jar, shouted, and I could hear cheering coming from the audience. At this point it was safe for me to assume I was going into the robot.
And what do you know thats exactly what happened. Now my memory is a little fuzzy about what happened here, but if I remember right then I believe he put a tube in the head of the robot, and put a different lid onto the jar, a vacuum like one that sucked me out of it, and that’s how I believe I ended up in the robot. After I ended up inside I passed out, whether intentional or not, I was then out cold.
I awoke later in a brightly colored room. The ceiling was white, the walls were yellow, and there was blue carpeting on the floor. I was in what appeared to be a standard hospital bed. I heard another noise, the same whirl from before.
It was the squirrel again, he entered my room and saw me awake.
“Ugh not another operation,” I said.
“No need!” said he, “You're good to go, I just need to tell you how to work!”
“You can understand me?!” I said in shock, “And I can understand you?!”
“Of course! Please if you calm down I would be more than happy to explain.”
A few minutes later after I calmed down he began to tell me the events of the past 24 hours.
“First, we know who you were, our species is infinitely older than yours, so we have been watching your planet ever since it was created. Why? Well when it was first created, one of our prophets forewarned us that the end of the universe would be created there. So we went and watched, waiting for our chance to come and try to stop the end from happening. Only about 200 of us came here on this ship. After about 1000 years, we received words from our home planet. One that it would be impossible to save ‘this’ universe, and two, our home world has since been destroyed.”
“I’m sorry to hear about your loss. But what do you mean by 1000 years, and by ‘this’ universe?”
“Thank you.” He said giving a tired smile. “As for your questions, we waited and waited here for the end to be created, my species can live for a million years and still have much life left in them. We had plenty of time on our hands, so we continued the pursuit of knowledge. Over the centuries we studied and learned your people’s languages, and added them to our ship’s data banks, the ship automatically translates any language, for it sounds to me like you are speaking my language. Your new body can also do that, but we will get into that some more later. One of the things we found in our studies is that this is not the only universe. There are thousands of other ones, millions even. Millions of your home world and ours, it is a beautiful thought. However they are all in danger.”
“What, how can they all be in danger?”
“The great destroyer is slowly picking them off one by one, it was only a matter of time before he arrived here, and gained this universes power. But you beat him to the punch. When you created that black hole at you world, you didn’t just destroy it, the rip caused a hole in space and time black holes have started appearing all over the universe, and in a matter of day the universe itself will be swallowed by black holes. Do not weep, listen. If the destroyer had consumed this universe he would have become nigh invincible, and all universes would have lost. You have saved millions of universes! However they are still in danger. The holes in time and space make it harder for travel out of this universe and impossible to travel into it. Therefore we have decided to try to protect other universes.”
“I want to help, really I do, but what can I do?”
“There was more to what the elders said when our world was destroyed. They said that ‘The end of our universe will be created on this new planet, but the one to save all other universes will be the creator.’ The creator is you. When you were born we noticed something different about you than anyone else in your planet’s history, your sheer will. This is also how you are still alive, when you entered the black hole we worked as fast as we could to get you out, but your sheer willpower allowed you to stay alive in there. We were able to recover the spirit, but no body, so we place your spirit into a robot, and you are now an android.”
I was shocked about all of this, but the story was not over.
“You may have noticed I have not said your name, that is because we were unable to recover that either. You had it in the black hole, but you do not anymore. Try to say it.”
“Uhh......,” I-I-I said, “I-I can’t remember!”
“Indeed. You do however need one to pass out of this dimension if you wish to make allies, the product code of your new body is Al-M1$T. That might be a good name for you, Alchemist. Not a name, but a title.”
“I will admit it has a catchy ring to it.” I said calmly, although still startled by my loss of my real name.
“Now then, I should probably tell you the features of your new body. Oh wait I almost forgot you haven’t seen it yet have you? Here, tell me what you think.” He pulled out a mirror, and as I stared into it, I noticed I truly was in the robot I had seen before, save that I now had spiky red hair on top of my head, that hung to the sides.
“Not bad.” I said.
“Wonderful, now then about your body. First thing to point out is that you can never die. Your spirit is so strong willed, that you could spend eternity inside a black hole and still live. Second, the second shell of your body is made up of Rue, a nearly indestructible, lightweight, material that protects a large part of your body. Third, your body runs off a hyper fusion core that will never run out of power. Fourth, your body has an on board computer, this computer will record everything that happens and will tell you stuff about people you have already met, and you can take notes with it too, it also has the sum total of our knowledge of everything including the translator, manual, and repair guide, as well as how to access some of you other tools later. Fifth, your motion is controlled by a brain to part chip, similar to the one in your device, speaking of. 6th, we were also able to duplicate your device, as we watched you build it, we also made sure that it could never make another black hole again, you can use it just as you would before, just think on what you want to do. Also those wings are not just for show, and you can also breathe fire by concentrating on it. Finally, there are sensors in your fur that will make you feel as if you were still alive, ones for cold, hot, wet, etc. Why don’t you try to walk.”
Trusting what he said, I got up and took a few steps. Surprisingly it was really easy, in fact it felt great, I seemed to move more fluently that when I was human!
“This is awesome!”
“That’s good to hear, now then we need to get you out of here.”
“What why?”
“Well the universe is ending, and we need to get you to another, unfortunately we only have enough time and power left for one person to go through, so we need to get you to the portal room.”
“Wait I wanted all of you to come with me, I can’t just leave you to die.”
“...” He paused, “We, all know what the end ment, we have all prepared to die, our lives mean nothing for the greater good. Most of us have lived over 500,000 years, having good long lives. Its up to you to allow others to have theirs.”
“But, but....”
“No time! Now hurry we have to get you through the portal now.”
We rushed to the portal room, I knew where it was thanks to the map and gps in my body, and was able to keep up with him.
“Alchemist. This is where we say goodbye,” said he from behind a control panel. “Please protect the other universes.”
“Goodbye..., hang on I never caught your name.”
“My name is Pete.”
“Then goodbye Pete, I shall never forget you, and all you have done for me.”
“The pass it forward and help those who truly need your help.”
“I will!”
And with that, Pete pulled a lever and a portal appeared 2 feet in front of me. I stepped through, and proceed on to the new universe. By the best way of all! Falling down. Why do I keep falling!
========================================================
