Since lots of people really like this kind of laughing face on my birds, I'll tell you the secret how to make them yawn happily: it's actually rubbing the "g-spot" on their back head, not the earlobes. Hes a 10 or 11yrold Papillon/Dachshund mix. Both breeds can live 16-18yrs with good care so I expect to have him a few more years. Hes not even showing signs of arthritis yet but then I have had him on supplements to help stave off that for a couple of years already. His only current health issue is he needs his teeth cleaned which will happen next month. If he needs any more dental work done then Ill have the money for it then too.
I rescued a young cockatiel a few years ago off craigslist. Apparently a mother threatened to give away her sons bird if he did not care for him properly. They brought the bird and all his items to me and the boy cried as his mother told him to say good by to his pet. The poor bird spent the next 2 days in the corner of his cage clearly mourning the loss of his master. I called the boys mother the next day and spoke to her. Her son had begged her to come and get JJ from me but she told him she couldn't that he was my bird now. I told her just how much JJ was missing her son and to bring him over, she did. As soon as the boy walked in the door the birds spirits soared and he started talking his little head off, head bobbing and dancing. I sat down with the boy and told him just how much his bird missed him and how he had done nothing but mope in the corner of his cage all weekend. I told him if he promised to take care of JJ I would give him his pet back. He hugged my neck and promised. I told him JJ was a good boy and if he was taken care of he would be his friend for the next 20 years. I have not heard anymore from them so I assume he kept his word as his mom has not called to bring JJ back to me.
