Way past late comment but I like the discussion and I'm never active anymore.

I actually know someone who years ago drew herself as a cute fursona that she felt was better looking then herself. After she realized she was attractive she changed and now she's paid to go to conventions and cosplay characters from video games or anime, has a mass following... And chances are you've probably even heard of her lol. But I personally still think she is far more attractive when she isn't trying so hard and stressing herself out just to get another twitch follower.
I've had many enjoyable conversations with women with regard to what is considered attractive and men aren't spared societies shallowness neither, it's just some of us have an easier time not giving a fuck.

See this whole thing that was around a while ago of tracing a real life picture of you and putting your fursona on top with those proportions looked pretty cool but it also does mean getting pretty much naked "in front of" an entire fandom. Um. Yeah. Maybe another time.

I think you raise up a very good point. I often get people asking for pictures of my RL self, its a bit creepy. I'd be interested to do a study to see how fursonas match up with the people they're modeled after.

Exactly, that's why this ref sheet thing was so fascinating! I admit it, I loved seeing the results, simply to see the actual person behind it and some of the pictures were absolutely lovely, I have to say. Far more interesting to look at than their normal stuff. BUT.. ;) I still feel very comfortable with nobody knowing me, thank you very much ;)

This sort of thing is hardly new and by far not unique to furry. Any that play SL know this and any chat room, BBS, dating site, community bulletin board or phone pick up thingie throughout the ages for that matter know it.
I'm going to add this and it's likely to get me odd looks or some nastygrams too. Furry isn't all that weird. All this behavior folks are pointing at has been there long before and is also outside the fandom.
To me getting upset that the character doesn't physically match RL is as stupid as worrying that whatever cartoon isn't real life or that the voice actors aren't really their characters
I have been through this a long time, even before the fandom was "officially" about. I have been meeting folks from BBS and mucks and at cons and such for ages.
I have never been disappointed that somebody I met wasn't the character, or now days avatar, or fursona they create. (Closest would be Doug Winger. Great guy. He's just much quieter RL than what you expect.)
I think it well known that mentally and in heart all my avatars/characters (Male, female or TG) are me, but in looks only my fursona is close. Many still draw him skinny. I'm not sure why :)
In this day and age, more and more, this sort of thing really just shouldn't matter. There are exceptions but over all, meh

Oh I totally agree. I don't think that all the weirdos of the world got scooped up and dropped in the furry sand-pit. But I also think that just because neighbour A is kidnapping the postman and chopping him into little pieces, it doesn't make neighbour B less creepy for doing the same thing ;) (I compare irrational expectations and chopping up people simply because every comparison gets better when there is blood and knifes involved.)

I don't think anyone would really get upset about anyone's real life looks, or if they did I wouldn't really care, but I just thought it was funny with how much sincerity people posted these comments. I don't know if they were doing it consciously or even thought about the impossibility of making me a compliment on my actual looks in pyjamas. And of course these things have always been around and will always be around, it's what people do, but I do admit that it doesn't really get old to joke a bit about it ;)

A better question than 'who knows' is 'why the fuck does it matter'? I'm one of those straights (with a few exceptions ) whose only sexual squick is non-consensual. Honestly, there's more important things to get upset over. *nips off to look at your gallery*

Well, my impression has always been that almost all furries want to create an avatar that represents how they would like to be, for the ego's sake. I've said it before and I'll say it again; its nothing to take seriously. Life is tough and full of misery, there is no point in making a fuss over what people do in there spare time to liven things up.

Lol! I was referring to real life. I just know a few going through some tough times; the fandom offers a fun and escapist way to express yourself, and also reach out to others, but I guess for many people what I said may be an exaggeration.

You should do one of those journal meme's that ask people what do they like most about you and see who actually knows anything about ya, what is right, what is wrong, ect. :)

If the conversation is good, that is a wonderful thing but knowing everything about the artist by prying and playing twenty questions or being so focused on what the person behind the art looks like is kind of defeatist in the first place since we're here first and foremost for the skill. I'd imagine the main reason people don't believe your some creepy fat guy is because you don't get offended when people hint, guess, or insult you might be otherwise.
