what it says on the tin, folks :v
if you want more details on the actual situation, i'll get into that now.
the auguer motor of our pellet stove took a dump. that means that fuel doesn't feed into the burn pot and consequently the fire doesn't stay lit. which means that instead of burning economic pellets we're back to burning heating oil, which is 3x more expensive if not moreso.
the GOOD news is that it's something that can be repaired. the chipin is for the quoted high-end price of the repairs, plus 100$ to offset the oil we've burnt while it's broken.
i REALLY didn't want to do this this month, and didn't think i was going to have to...until the stove broke :B but i really *REALLY* appreciate anyone who donates or considers donating.

hopefully it's not an intensive job D: ours is a fireplace inset, which makes it a bit harder to get at the internal workings. you have to drag it out and then take the back off.
what's the sign they're about to go? for a month before ours went it was making intermitant squeaking sounds.

Strange, maybe the being abandoned had some negative effects on it. Mines over 10 years and has not quite broken yet. I'm pretty sure I'll have to replace it within the next few years though.
Once you get the new one, if you can, try cleaning the auger section out each year before you begin using it for the winter. There are several good guides online for how to do it and it should drastically extend the lifetime of the auger.

i think being in the empty house it endured some abuses. a lot of the interior of the stove had surface rust. when we called to get it serviced before using it the first time it was also pretty apparent the previous owners didn't clean it before they moved out. so it'd just been kind of sitting in its own filth right next to a huge draft for years.
maybe it's not completely busted, i dunno. that's what our repairguy friend suggested to us on the phone based on the description of the noise and how it refused to stay lit, but he hasn't had a chance to open it up so it's possible it's not failing. but best to err on the side of financial caution with these things y'know? better to have extra money to put into savings than to have no money if it turns out the part does need replacing.
