No...more...Fire...Fighting...combos...EVER!! I've seen enough of them, even if they're starters! At least Fennekin looks like it could be something different this time. Fennec fox is a desert-dweller so...plain Fire...Fire/Ground? The possibilities look better than another fighting combo. But with Yveltal...that would make zero sense. >:P

Its name is actually a reference to the bird/snake/man gods of the ancient central/south american tribes. Either way, Yvaltal is fucking awesome and the sole reason I've chosen Y over X. (Already preordered my copy, only nine more months...)

Huh...ya know I never noticed that, but given their styles of naming, maybe I should have seen that coming. Xerneas's naming style kinda reminded me of the name of the dragon god, Quetzalcoatl...no idea why, Xerneas is clearly a deer, not a dragon. XD

Also, for Fennekin (which will be my starter), I'm thinking maybe a Fire/Psychic, if not just a pure fire. It does draw inspiration from Kitsune...

Actually...Ninetales draws more inspiration from the Ninetales. Hell, its Japanese name, Kyuukon, is a romanization of the word kyuubi which means 9 and the word kon which means spirit or soul, basically putting together the two words you get "nine souls". Based on Ninetales's many similar entries throughout generations, this displays popular Japanese myth that kyuubi-no-kitsune are not just shape-shifting, mischief-loving fox demons, but are also a mixed conscience formed of nine separate people. Since there isn't enough data about Fennekin yet, I can't actually determine if whether or not it will be more derived of the traditional kitsune or the one we've all grown to know will be certain. All I can say is, so far, Fennekin's English name seems to be a romanization of the smallest species of fox, fennec, and the first half of the word kindle, meaning to spark a flame. Personally, if it's truly a fennec, I'd like to see it be a Fire/Ground type, since I generally associate Ground types with sand and often in the past have mistakenly said "Sand" types, since my first ever Ground type...obviously Sandshrew of course. And yes, I do these paragraph answers QUITE often. Dunno why, maybe I just like stating the obvious. :3

Kyuubi actually literally means "9 tails", not just nine, which is kyu(u). And just because there's already a Pokemon based of an animal doesn't mean there won't be another. Charizard and Dragonite are both very clearly based off European-style dragons (though Charizard doesn't show in typing), and there are multiple toad/frog pokemon (Politoed, Sysmitoad, Croagunk, and Froakie). Considering the significance of foxes in Japanese mythology, it wouldn't be surprising so see it given kitsune-like qualities, just like how most of the dragons in the series take on roles as either protectors or aggressors, which call back to eastern and western dragon mythology respectively. And Fennekin could also be a simple portmanteau of Fennec and kin, meaning fox-related, but it's pretty obviously based on a fennec fox.

I doubt it'll be a fire/ground simply because that typing would give it a 4x weakness to water which would completely screw up the rival dynamic, give it immunity to electricity, and actually make it weak to one of it's own types. It might serve well for a one-off Pokemon, but the starters tend to be a little more balanced. But, I really don't know. We'll just have to wait and see!

Heh...type imbalance? How's about Swampert? Four times weakness to grass type, which is its only weakness. And yeah, we'll have to wait and see. I honestly don't want to see another kitsune Pokemon, even though they only technically did it twice...once with Ninetales and partially with Zoroark; I realize Zoroark is not a kyuubi, but it has the same powers attributed to kitsunes of lore, who are in fact able to create illusions so strong they wind up being reality to not just the person it's trying to trick, but itself as well. This could point out to the speculation of Oni Island in Okami being an illusion meant to stall Amaterasu for time in Okami, since the island completely vanishes after he's slain. As for Fennekin's typing, I honestly just want it to be something new because Fire has had the least variety of the starters; everything after the second gen has just been fire/fighting. I'll freaking snap if I see one more of those. >:3

Considering that's its only weakness, that balances it out.

I don't think Pokemon really has anything to do with Okami though. Vanishing islands are pretty common in the lore of an island nation (look back to gen three that had a vanishing and appearing island, though for different reasons.) And I don't care too much about the typing, but I kind of agree that I don't want another fire/fighting, but that's purely a personal reference since fighting isn't one of the types I use often. Whatever it ends up being, I'll probably like it.

However, I doubt it's going to be fire/fighting simply because every since fighting type or partial fighting type is bipedal (to make punching moves a more logically possible), save for the Swords of Justice, and pretty much every non-fighting pre-evolution to the fighting types is bipedal as well. Fennekin doesn't look like it'll go bipedal, but we'll really just have to wait until we see the rest of the family to make better speculation. It'll probably be a while before that happens though, seeing as the release is nine months away.

True...keep in mind both Okami and Pokemon draw heavily from mythology, Okami drawing completely from traditional Japanese myth and religion. Anyway, I don't really have anything against the Fighting types personally, just the fact that every other gen after the second was a fighting combo, and that gives the starter a total of four weaknesses: water, ground, psychic, and flying. Anyway, so far, the speculation is they'll remain pure types. I don't at all have anything against pure types, they're actually fairly balanced overall. Digressions aside, nine months of waiting, nine months of speculation, nine months to wait for confirmations. :3

Maybe...we'll have to wait quite awhile before we can know for sure. Given sites like Psypokes and Serebii, it's highly likely we'll see them in the next few months, if not weeks. ;3
