Well when it comes to creating characters, the simple rule I follow myself is trying to add some sort of part of your own personality into him or her, and also trying to think of some kind of flaw to the character also. It's more like trying to be as realistic and detailed like trying to fit that character into the real world.
Heh, it certainly doesn't look like he is up to any good, no.
I've spent most of the short time I've been on this website 'till now looking at more 'realistic' (I use the term fairly loosely) pieces of art, especially in regard to style and anatomy, so this certainly caught my eye when I saw this amongst the other thumbnails on my page. Whilst I don't know if it's the artists style, or something you had in mind personally when you commissioned this piece, your lizard fellow certainly stands out, and the more I look, the more I find myself quite liking this cartoon-y style. I've seen the odd one or two pieces that are cartoon in style, but they've always looked like illustrations, with fairly heavy dark outlines and such. And whilst that's an acceptable style, I feel it firmly grounds the picture and its subject as an art piece. The way this devious looking fellow has been drawn and designed, he looks like he belongs in that style, and because of that, this works well as a character and a character piece. He rises above simply being an illustration.
Uh, anyway, hopefully I was making sense in that whole spiel. Maybe I'm overthinking things just a little.
Still, I really like this character of yours. He's looks lively and real despite being rather abnormal in appearance, despite his wickedly huge and awesome grin. Kudos to you for thinking up such an interesting character design, and kudos to the artist for really bringing life to him.

Heh....you are likely the second person to actually say that my character here is the most realistic out of all the others.I mean, he was just a no brainer to come up with actually since he is based off of my own personality and what I was in general to the world around me. I was suprised to see how well that all developed into what he appears today. Especially like this http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9093109/
He's based off of you, hmm? Knowing that, it does make me wonder if using that in the creation of this fellow Septur's design had any kind of influence into the believability of his appearance. Not to go on about myself too much, but I'm looking to try and make up a character for myself as a kind of face on here, especially since most everyone I've seen so far on here does. I may follow you lead and consider basing him/her off of myself. If that ends up being the case, thank you in advance for the idea.
I wont set my sights quite so high as that amazing image you linked me to though, heh.

Another thing about creating a character is thinking entirely hard of how it fits in the natural world all around him. You have to think realistic about that characters strength's and weakness to make it be balanced. Where does it struggle, what does it have to face, and how does it managed to achieve it's main goal? You have to think very carefully along those important questions about any kind of new character. As long as your character is not a Mary Sue or any kind of god powered character, then you have made yourself a great creation.
A story, a goal, strengths, weaknesses. Man, I've still got a whole lot to think about it seems. But at least I know I'm not so conceited as to think of, as you put it, a god powered character. I've never been fond of anything along those lines, be it god-killing or playing a god. So I'm going along the right lines I guess.
Mary Sue though? Would you mind explaining that?

Ah, thanks for the link. That was quite the interesting read. I can see now why you brought this up, especially considering how you mentioned Septur here is based upon your own personality. It would be easy enough to make a Mary Sue out of a personal character without, like you said, giving him/her weaknesses and struggles.
Hopefully I will avoid falling into this trap when it comes to making my own character. Thank you for the help, Kaine75.
