Got bored so I drew this. The bark on the tree sucks and the backdrop could use work but I am calling it here. Any critique is accepted.

I think this came out rather cute and fun. It certainly shows that you put a lot of effort into Derpy and getting her positioning right on that branch. Her shading is also pretty good, too.
As for the background, it's not bad. Though, I could see it being a minor thought after all the work you probably put into just Derpy.
Overall, you did a fine job of giving a realistic look to Derpy while keeping the tooniness with the background. :) Definitely a fine pic to fav indeed. :)

Backgrounds are typically not as important as the subject you are drawing. As such, to keep arts fun, have you thought of borrowing backgrounds from, say, screen caps in the show? Or, perhaps, since you are drawing more realistic art here, you could get some cool nature pics that can serve as BGs for your works? :)
From those I have talked with, a BG can take actually longer than the actual character(s) drawn. As such, there's nothing wrong with borrowing BGs so you can do what you like without the big sigh of having to spend hours on making the perfect BG for what you've done. Heck, you could even make edits to the borrowed BG to create exactly what you want for the scene. This could help if you wish to eventually make your own backgrounds less bothersome when you get better / faster at doing them. Never want to take the fun out of a work. Nope, nope, nope!

My largest issue with using a premade picture or someone else's work is that it will likely clash with mine throwing the entire picture off. Where mine has linear brush stokes and surges there's may have circles and hard . The focus of the picture may be lost in the process.
Thank you for the idea none the less. I should start using images of backgrounds as references and going from there.
