In Britain they're called dummys. Most people in the US call them pacifiers. For some reason my parents called mine a 'binky'.

Well, at least she's picking on someone on her own emotional level this time.

I don't know what my family called 'em. We were probably boring and stuck to "pacifier", though. Baby talk and such things were always taboo in my house, except maybe if you were talking to a cat.

My mom didn't ever let me have one. She thought they were bad for you. It would appear she was ahead of her time, as it seems these days many pediatricians agree with that sentiment.

binky is the name for the playtex brand of pacifiers, but it caught on as a nickname for any paci here in america. my grandma and mom called them that. :3

now that i think about it, "pacifier" is a very martial-sounding term for something you give a baby. "pacifying" anything besides babies usually involves the wholesale slaughter of every male over 16

Some British terms sound a bit weird to Americans because they mean other things to us.
Never tell an American that you're going to "smoke some fags."
