“No.”
“WHAT!? You can’t just refuse to come with me! We have a contract!”
“Sorry foxy but contract or not there is NO. WAY. IN. HADES. You’re getting me to go into THAT forest.”
“Come on Gaia, it can’t possibly be that bad!”
“It is. And you’re an idiot for still wanting to go in there.”
“FINE! …… least change me before I go.”
“Fine, can’t let you go commit suicide in a dirty diaper can I…”
Journal Log, five days since I turned that spirit in the pond into a little puppy making it… um… Sunday I think. Location, base of a large mountain range near the border to Russia outside the forest. Status, wonder why my spirit partner turned into a chicken. Following a trail of legends I’ve come to an… unusual forest that spreads out through the lower parts of a mountain range. Several different cultures have called it different things but it all means about the same, something along the lines of “Forest of Blood”. Anyway what all of them agree on is it’s an evil place and there’s no town or civilization within five miles of it… not to mention I can sense an INSANELY powerful source of magical energy somewhere inside it. More than enough to give me multiple tails, maybe even a full nine of them! And that’s MORE than worth the risk of some supposedly cursed forest!
“Forest of blood huh?” Reynard asked as the little fox tapped his paw against a tree “Can see how it got called that…” the trees were unlike anything Reynard had seen before, tall and sturdy with interlocking branches that formed a thick canopy that blocked any light from getting through them. Strangest of all though was their color. The bark was a pure, pitch black like it’d been dipped in tar and the leaves were a pure, gleaming blood red… and was bright enough that between them and the red carpet of leaf litter on the ground it provided an unnatural kind of crimson glow in what would be an otherwise pitch black forest.
“Well then Gaia if you ain’t coming then I’ll go myself, see you soon!” Reynard said, adjusting his thick diaper a little like adjusting a new set of pants before waddling into the forest and not bothering to look back at the earth spirit as she called after him “Don’t say I didn’t warn you!” He had to admit there was definitely an… unnatural feeling about this place, also an ominous feeling to it, but after so long of futile searching for something that could help him he was desperate enough to chance it. Besides… the magic of whatever was in this place was so strong he could almost taste it. If he could just harness even a fraction of it it’d be more than enough…

Journal Log, probably hours since I entered this place. Location, still in the damn forest. Status, wondering if I should have listened to Gaia. This is the most disturbingly unnatural place I’ve even been in and I was raised in a pocket dimension made to recreate feudal Japan! There’s NOTHING here but these freaky trees! No animals, no other plant life, no nothing! Worse yet trying to use my senses to navigate the place just gives me a splitting headache so I’m literally wandering blind here! Considering trying to find my way back out but then I’d have to deal with the “I Told You So”s from Gaia…
Suddenly a sound made Reynard’s drooping ears shoot straight up as he whipped his head around looking for the source. Past the rustle of leafs overhead and under his paw this was the first other sound he’d heard since he entered this forest. It was footsteps, definitely footsteps… hooved feet by the sound of it. There was another sound too. This one was like… fire? Definitely the light crackle of fire and what was weirder is it was accompanying each of the footsteps. The images of the cloven footed demons and devils from hell from his picture book on monsters popped into his head, and considering what kind of place this was he wouldn’t be too surprised… but the footsteps were way too small for that.
Curiosity getting the better of him Reynard waddled towards the source of the noise, grumbling a little about how disorienting the red glow like light of the forest was. He stopped in his tracks for a moment as he looked down at the most unusual trail of prints he’d ever seen. They were little horse hoof prints, barely bigger than his own paws, but made of flames. Not bothering to look where he was going Reynard followed these tracks through the red leaf litter, personally amazed they hadn’t set the whole place ablaze. The leaves had to be a least a little flame resistant, probably another unusual trait of these freaky trees.
“What are you doing?”
Reynard jump a little in surprise as a cold and flat but oddly juvenile sounding voice jarred him out of his daydreaming state. Looking up he found the trail of flaming hoof prints led to… a foal with pitch black fur, a mane and tail made of fire, flaming hooves, burning red eyes… and a stark white diaper. Reynard stood there staring for a moment in sheer surprise before the foal snorted “Well? I was enjoying this creepy atmosphere until you ruined it. What are you doing?” he demanded, sounding like he was imposing and in control even though he was probably only a little bigger than Reynard.
Reynard blinked and tilted his head. He was honestly confused by this, he’d expected some goat legged demon or something worse… not a diapered my little pony. “What are you?” he asked, not bothering to restrain his confusion as the foal snorted in annoyance “I am a Nightmare from the depth of hell. My name is Dante.” He said as Reynard had to stifle a laugh “Nightmare? That some kinda bad joke? And last time I checked mares were female horses.” The fox said, ignoring the insulted and furious look on Dante’s face as he went on “YOU’RE the big bad evil in this forest? I don’t believe”
Reynard didn’t get to finish as a strong hoof collided with his chest and pitched him backwards into a tree hard. He squeaked in pain before slapping at his chest to try and put out the flaming hoof print that was now there. Dante let his impassive look creep into a smirk for moment as he stepped forward “I was going to get rid of you for ruining my time here anyway… but for that mare comment I’m going to make this one hurt.” He said in a calm and self-confident tone as if it was already done… before shooting forward to kick at Reynard with his flaming hooves again.
Reynard scampered away just in time though, summoning up some fox-fires on instinct and sending them dancing around Dante’s face to try and distract him. The foal gave a genuinely amused sounding laugh as he brushed the fireballs away like a group of annoying flies “Flames? Really? You use fire against a child of hell?” he flicked his mane dramatically sending small embers flying all around as Reynard winced as the flames landed on him. Ignoring the pain he ducked behind one of the trees and frantically fished around in his pouch. If he found those in time maybe he could…
He squealed, bringing his masculinity into question, as one of Dante’s flaming hooves collided with the tree trunk a few inches from his head making the fox scamper away like his life depended on it. Unfortunately even down on all fours his awkward fleeing didn’t hold a candle to how fast the foal could move as another blow sent him sprawling as he squeaked in pain and tried to put the small fire on his fur out. Smirking Dante advanced on the fox as Reynard was slapping at himself, flames around his hooves growing as he looked ready to finish this.
Clapping his paws together in desperation Reynard called up another feat of magic kitsunes naturally had, creating lightning, to try and stop the hell beast advancing on him… but like his tiny fox-fires the tiny bolt of electricity he launched barely qualified as an attack. Luckily it fired out and zapped Dante right on the nose. The foal winced and let out a whinny in surprise as he closed his eyes for a moment and rubbed his nose, which was all the opening Reynard needed as he sucked in air and held his breath, turning invisible in the process as he tried to silently flee before Dante recovered. He could only hold his breath for a minute but if he was lucky he’d be far away from Dante before that happened…
A flaming hoof to the diaper butt sent Reynard tumbling into a tree as he squeaked in pain, becoming visible again as Dante snorted “I can see the leaves moving under your feet idiot.” Strolling over arrogantly to the whimpering fox Dante reared back to punch Reynard’s little skull in… as Reynard finally pulled the paw he was rummaged in his satchels with out and slapped a slip of paper with some kind of calligraphy painted on it onto the demon. Dante grunted in pain as his whole body seized up and went rigid while little sparks danced from the slip all the way over him.
“HA! Take THAT demon!” Reynard shouted, pausing to pat down his diaper to make sure it wasn’t burning from Dante’s last attack as he stood proudly, a big grin on his face “I might not know much about using those seals but even I can seal up a baby demon like… you…” Reynard’s grin fell and he trailed off mid-sentence as he watched Dante, with a great amount of effort, reach up and rip the seal off him before burning it to ashes. Reynard stood there jawing in disbelief and fear as Dante snorted angrily “That… hurt.” and took a step towards Reynard.
Before Reynard could scream in fear though both of the toddlers froze as if turned to stone as their pupils shrunk and they paled in fear. Reynard didn’t know what Dante was sensing… but his danger sense just started SCREAMING in his ear louder than it’d ever done before. He’d been able to sense the slightly evil magical energies of the forest all around him since he’d entered it but this… there was… something… some THING in here. Some THING in the forest… was it the forest itself? He couldn’t tell but whatever it was it screamed feelings into his skull like a roaring lion.
KILL! DANGER! EVIL! KILL! KILL! KILL!
Both toddlers promptly filled their diapers out of fear as survival instincts kicked in and they took off running in different directions, neither caring where they were going so long as it was away from that… that… THING. Reynard scampered on all fours like an animal feeling from a forest fire not even having the presence of mind to try and hold his breath to activate his invisibility. All he could think about was getting away from the thing in the forest before it caught up to him as his brief life flashed before his eyes and only his own senses kept him from blindly running face first into a tree. He kept running like this till he finally burst free into the sunshine again and kept running after that till he finally collapsed out of exhaustion, panting and trembling as he lay there face down in the dirt.
Dazed and confused it took him a few moments to realize Gaia had appeared and picked him up, gently cuddling the trembling fox. He was used to the spirit being rather callous about his feelings, or enjoying teasing him… the fact she was trying to comfort him just made it slam down harder as he broke down sobbing in her arms. Slowly the dark, monstrous, indescribable presence faded from his sense as he began to regain his wits and sniffled softly. Still hugging tightly to Gaia as he weakly whimpered out.
“W-w-what was t-t-that… thing?”
“… I don’t know. I wasn’t in the forest when whatever sent you running showed up so I couldn’t say… but I do know there’s a reason nothings alive in there. I don’t want to know what that reason is.”
“I was s-so scared… s-s-so s-scared…”
Gaia sighed and rubbed Reynard’s back as the fox kit sobbed more into her. The earth spirit wasn’t sure whether she was surprised or annoyed Reynard was acting the age he looked… and she certainly wasn’t going to admit she was happy he got out of there alive. Either way she hoped the fox would LISTEN next time she tried to tell him some place was dangerous. Laying him down to change Reynard into a clean diaper Gaia noticed something and tilted her head a little.
She also hoped Reynard would tell her why there were hoof prints on his chest when he mentally recovered.
