I was asked to illustrate a story by a guy who publishes a fanzine. Since he's publishing a written piece of mine in the same issue, I figured I better do him the favour. I drew the line at one part of his request though. He thought it would be spiffy if I drew real portraits of fans who have all died. This was a clever idea because the article I was illustrating was about a fan who died and went to the big Worldcon in the Sky without knowing it. Whether or not it was clever I'll leave to you to decide, but one thing for sure was that it would be a f*ck of a lot of work! First I'd have to find photos, and next I'd have to practise capturing a likeness from each of them before I could even begin the actual illustration. I put my foot down and said I'd just do arbitrary faces and find some sort of clues to signify their biologically challenged state. The upper panel ishows the unlucky fan who doesn't know he's dead getting fried by his electrically powered mimeo. As far as I know, they can't do that. At least it took more than a mere wall-socket to stop me that time...

Actually, that sounds more like a Ditto machine. Superficially similar, the Ditto works by imprinting a dye onto the paper from a typed master, transferred by methyl alcohol. A mimeo has a styped stencil. That is, a wax sheet with letters cut into it by a typwriter. Ink is forced through the cut letters from the silk screen the stencil is wrapped around. It smells too, but not of alcohol. More like paint.
