I think it is only a matter of practice and looking at foamworks with a critical eye- I like to take photos of WIPs, because it's a flat 2d image, it's easier to see issues that are overlooked in real life. You can also look at it in the mirror to see it differently. I think these problems will be easy to overcome as you keep making more costumes. :D
