Lots and lots of reference and lots and lots of perspective lines/practice. I've been giving a lot more focus to backgrounds lately, which helps too, since they used to be more of an afterthought. Try and think of the backgrounds as characters in their own right? The setting should have as much personality as the characters in some ways... I only really started focusing on it after visiting England though. The buildings and architecture and landscapes there are totally different from what I'm used to. Western cities are fugly as hell compared to Europe.
Colour-coded bookshelf... That's clever, or at least new... I mean, alphabetized and by author are common. I personally do it by series, often by preference of those series. Sadly, I don't have a bookshelf since we moved a couple of years ago. >_< Regardless, I can't wait to see more. ^^
LOVE the art,
but the concept sounds a lot like this: http://apox0n.deviantart.com/art/Ni.....eral-170861637
(it's pretty cool i'm not the only one who's thought of stuff like this)

Why is the main character called Frost? He didn't have his powers since birth. It wouldn't be as peculiar except the wolf character in a later page is called Cinder and I suspect will have some sort of fire or heat based power. It's not very believable for two characters to have names which just so happen to coincide with powers they picked up after they were named in the first place.
Well them having powers is part of the rules of the universe, that's established at the beginning of the story. If it were just Frost, if his folks named him that because he was born blue, then that's believable, but if Cinder does indeed have fire powers then that's rather a huge coincidence don't you think?
Furthermore, just because it's been done before doesn't make it any more plausible. It is, I feel, an aspect of the story that even characters in the world would have to step back and think about for a second.

Feel free to contemplate it or feel it is unrealistic from your perspective, but I like giving characters names relevant to their identities or circumstances myself, regardless of how realistic it is or not. Many of my favourite stories and authors do the same thing and I personally appreciate it. Good enough for them, good enough for me.
Not necessarily, you could make your argument against Sirius and Remus Lupin whose names both allude to the dog star constellation and wolves when neither had their 'abilities' as a baby. It's just the author having a bit of fun. I'm obviously not going for high realism or seriousness here; if I were I wouldn't make the characters furries...
