Morning broke over the open fields and valleys. Two pairs of eyes opened as the light hit them. They belonged to Flame and Ember. The fire dragon spent the night at Ember’s cave to make sure she was okay, but after the moment they shared on the ledge outside of the cave, he knew she would be okay. Flame looked down at Ember and realized she was already staring back at him.
“Good morning,” Flame inquired, still maintaining eye contact with his mate-to-be. Ember pecked a kiss on his lips.
“Good morning, Flame.” Flame felt his heart flutter as Ember’s velvety lips came and left from his. Ember giggled as his red cheeks turned pink. The two dragons got up from their sleeping place, stretched and walked out onto the cave’s ledge. They sat and enjoyed the view the sun had to offer.
Flame smiled when he glanced away from the view and over to Ember. She didn’t notice him staring at her because she had many things rolling around in her mind: like how her and Flame were going to plan their wedding, where it would be… The list went on and on until a thought jutted its way into her head. She remembered how rude and immature she was acting towards Spyro yesterday.
She hung her head down. Flame asked, “Ember, is everything alright?”
Ember shrugged. “I don’t know. I was just thinking how I acted yesterday. I think I owe Spyro and his fiancée an apology.”
Flame nodded and then put a wing around his mate-to-be. “Better now than later.”
Ember nodded and the two took to the skies. They arrived at Warfang within the hour and headed straight for the temple. Ember and Flame approached the thick wooden door of the temple. Flame pushed it open and let Ember in first before letting himself in. They entered the stone foyer of the temple and saw Spyro, Cynder, Volteer and Cyril carrying on in a conversation. The pink dragoness shyly approached Spyro.
“Um Spyro,” Ember squeaked in an apologetic tone. Spyro and Cynder turned to her.
Spyro frowned. “Ember, I hope you aren’t mad at me for yesterday.”
Ember shook her head in response. “Of course not. In fact I’m very glad you did.”
Spyro was shocked to hear this. “Oh, you are?”
Flame stepped forward and put his wing around Ember’s back. “Spyro, I proposed to Ember finally.”
Spyro was astonished. “You did, I’m so happy for you two,” Spyro exclaimed. Cynder cheered as well even though she didn’t know them that well. Ember looked over to Cynder and extended a paw out to her.
“I’m sorry for my behavior yesterday. We haven’t been properly introduced. Hi, my name is Ember.”
Cynder smiled and shook her paw. “My name is Cynder, Spyro’s fiancée.”
“Well, you’re very lucky to have a guy like Spyro at your side. I wish you two the best.” Ember snuggled up closer to Flame, but retained eye contact with the black dragoness.
“You know, Ember,” Cynder started. “I don’t know many people in Warfang, and I need a maid of honor. Would you be interested?”
Ember’s face lit up. “Of course! I would be honored.” The dragons continued with their conversation as the Guardians left the room.
3weeks later…
Spyro and Cynder’s wedding day
The day had finally come for the happy couple. Half the city of Warfang showed up for the occasion. The Guardians had set up pews and an alter in the large garden so the two heroes could have a proper wedding. Spyro and Flame were already at the altar. Volteer and Cyril were sitting beside the altar with Flame and Spyro. Back in the dressing room, Ember was rushing back and forth to make her best friend’s big day the best one of her life. Ember made sure Cynder’s outfit was perfect. Cynder opened her eyes and looked at herself in the mirror. A white dress wrapped around Cynder’s torso and hugged her body. Ember popped out from behind the black dragoness with a white wreath crowded with flowers in her mouth. Cynder gasped in astonishment at the beautiful circlet of flowers. Yellow, red and blue daisies lined the side of the headdress with white rose petals making up the rest.
Ember set it gently on top of Cynder’s head. The colorful assortment sat perfectly on her brow, completing the outfit. Ember sat beside her friend and hugged her. “You look beautiful.” Cynder blushed.
“You think Spyro will like it?”
Ember gasped. “Like it? He’s going to be head over paws when he sees you.”
“Thank you, Ember.”
“No problem.”
A knock sounded on the door. Ember opened it, it was Terrador. “Hello, Terrador.”
Terrador nodded in recognition. “Ember, Cynder, it’s almost time. Spyro, Flame and my brothers are in place. Just like you rehearsed last week, walk through the garden’s back doors and right down to the alter.”
With that, Terrador left to meet his brothers at the alter. Ember grabbed the back of the dress that dragged behind Cynder with her mouth. Cynder left the dressing room with Ember trailing her and waited behind the garden’s doors. When the music started playing, Cynder’s eyes twitched frantically back and forth and bright flares of pink burst on her black cheeks. Cynder looked to her rear and saw Ember winking at her with a smile on her face. The black Dragoness returned her gaze to the door and took a big gulp of air. The doors opened silently and slowly as Cynder stepped through them. Cynder looked around the room as she slowly trotted towards her future. Terrador stood behind the alter with a scroll rolled out before him, the two remaining Guardians were sitting on the right side of the alter with happy grins on their faces. Then her eyes fell onto her husband-to-be. Spyro’s mouth hung open in amazement. Cynder shot Spyro a sweet smile with a compliment of sparkling eyes. Spyro could tell she was just as excited as he was.
When she made it up to the alter, Ember dropped the back of the dress and sat beside Flame. Spyro stepped up to the alter facing his wife-to-be. Terrador looked down at them and gave a hearty chuckle. “Friends,” Terrador announced in his deep voice. “We are gathered here today in the eyes of the ancestors to witness the binding of two fortunate souls in matrimony. Let our ancestors bless their marriage and that these two may join them in the afterlife so that they may bless later marriages to come.”
Terrador moved down the alter and let his brother Volteer replace him. “Now we will ask them to exchange their vows.” Volteer moved his glance from the crowd of dragons and down to Cynder. “Cynder, do you take Spyro to be your mate and husband? Do you also promise to stay by his side through health and sickness, until death do you part?”
Cynder’s gaze drove into Spyro’s as she opened her mouth. “I do.”
Spyro felt a drop of sweat roll down his brow. He knew he was next to be asked the most important question of his life. He knew his answer would be yes, but he was afraid his mouth would mess up and say the exact opposite. Cynder saw how nervous he was. She put a paw on his cheek and looked him in the eye. All of a sudden, Spyro’s nervous feelings went away. For a moment, the only people in the room were just he and Cynder. Then Spyro heard his name being called by the Storm Guardian, knocking him from the trance he was in.
“Spyro, Do you take Cynder to be your mate and wife? Do you also promise to stay by her side through health and sickness, until death do you part?”
Spyro opened his mouth and said excitedly, “I do.”
Volteer smiled at his old pupil. “Then by the power vested in Guardians, we pronounce you dragon and wife.” Volteer lifted a friendly eyebrow to Spyro with a humorous grin lining his face. “Spyro, you may kiss your bride.”
Cynder could feel her cheeks turn pinker than they already were as Spyro stared deeply into his new wife’s eyes. Spyro and Cynder’s breathing rate increased as their muzzles slowly moved to one another’s. When Spyro locked his lips with hers, Cynder could feel all of the air escape her lungs. The kiss lasted for nearly a minute until they broke to catch their breath. The crowd went crazy; the heroes that saved their city were united in holy matrimony. The crowd’s cheers could be heard from the gates of the city… and even in the catacombs of the Temple.
Malefor grinned as he paced back and forth in his cage. Shady was curled up with her eyes closed in the back corner of the metal barred room.
“Only a matter of time now my dear, Shady,” Malefor exclaimed, waiting to see the faces of his two generals. The crowd continued to cheer, reminding the Dark Master that his escape was imminent. Then a loud bang could be heard from across the drawbridge, past the metal door and down the hallway. Shady stood up and joined her husband by the cell’s door. The guards standing by the drawbridge’s release lever took defensive positions by the door to prevent the attacker’s entrance. The metal door burst open, and four dragons exited through it.
The four dragons were armed to the teeth with armored chest pieces and talon guards that could have cut straight through a full-grown tree with one swipe. The intruders wore jet-black torso pieces along with gold gauntlets for their two front and back paws. Their wings had the same colored armor lining them just around the wings’ membranes. Malefor chuckled because only he and a few people knew that the four dragons were part of his personal guard; the elite soldiers of his army. The two bridge guards lunged for them, but the four agile dragons quickly disposed of them by gutting them with their golden claws.
The two Warfang guards bled out with their lives flashing before their eyes. Malefor’s guard approached the cage with two familiar figures following them.
“Seraphim Guard, stand down,” Maximus commanded in a booming voice. The Seraphim guard sat on their hind legs and pounded their left paws against their armored chests in a salute fashion.
“And not a moment too soon,” Malefor hissed. Maximus and Reaver bowed before their master. “Oh stop groveling and open this damn cage!”
Maximus told everyone to stand clear and threw his tail into the air. Maximus let his muscles do the rest as his drillbit-tail swung through the air and made contact with the cage. The sound of his tail hitting the cage let deafening echoes shout through the large room. The barred door was bent significantly and the lock was history. Malefor put his mouth inches away from the door and blew on it subtly. The door fell off its weakened hinges and down at Maximus’s feet.
Shady moved close to her husband. Reaver and Maximus moved into a bowing position in front of their mistress. Shady chuckled and dismissed their bows. Malefor faced Reaver sternly. “What’s our escape rout?”
“We entered through a sewage tunnel that lead right into the barracks. We have two Seraphim guards disposing of any witnesses that may have seen us enter that way.”
Malefor grinned maliciously. “Good work. Now escort us out. The wedding will cover out tracks and prevent people from seeing us.”
The Seraphim Guard took their places in front of the group. They formed a wall around Malefor and Shady, in order to protect them from any Warfang guards that may have caught wind of the intrusion. The group hastily made their way through the broken steel door and into the hallway. They made several turns through the hallways until they finally reached the sewer’s entrance. Malefor stepped through first, then he helped his wife through the wall’s gaping hole. Reaver, Maximus and the rest of the Seraphim guard crawled into the hole and sealed it by toppling the entrance’s opening; clogging it with debris.
They crawled a great distance before reaching the escape rout’s ending. When they exited the tunnel, two extra Seraphim Guard waited for them with a minute pile of Warfang guard’s bodies laying at their feet. Malefor paid no attention to them and walked right over them. Shady and Malefor winced as the sunlight hit their faces. The sun’s warmth felt soothing. Finally, they felt alive again.
Shady inhaled a breath of fresh air and now remembered what it felt like to be on the outside again. Malefor returned to the task. “Seraphim guard, you are back under my command. I command you to lead us back to our lair.”
The Guard nodded and took flight with Malefor, his wife and the two generals following close behind.
“Warfang better prepare it’s borders for a battle because I am establishing a new world order,” Malefor maliciously commented as he continued to fly to his and Shady’s secret lair.
