There are actually many different forms of automatic stick shifts like the Saab Sensonic or the modern Tiptronic units used by the sportier Volkswagen products, the version of the Volkswagen Automatic Stickshift equipped to this car would be a three speed manual unit that is connected to a vacuum-operated automatic clutch, when the driver of the vehicle puts pressure on the gearshift the clutch disengages by activating a 12 volt solenoid that operates the vacuum clutch, this allows the driver to shift between gears, once pressure is removed the clutch re-engages automatically. This transmission was also equipped with a torque converter, which allows the car to idle in gear. Hope that helps.
