This aircraft will always be remembered for having the most lethal gun system ever created and installed on a jet. The GAU-8A used to have two gunfire settings of 2100 and 4200 rounds per minutes; this however was updated to a fixed 3900 rounds per minute. The other aspect of the plane is its titanium structure; it can take lots of punishment and still get the pilot back safely.
If you look carefully at the engine intakes, you can practically count the number of fan blades that make up the GE TF34 turbofan. Oh and the 7-barrel gatling gun is staring at you!!

The Warthog says 'Goodbye. You lose."
The only thing that could replace the A-10 is a similar plane designed around the ground attack role. As the USAF is ruled by the 'Higher, Faster, Farther' fighterjocks, they don't want to get dirty down in the weeds where 'Lower, Slower, Longer' rules the battlefield. The US military should just scrap the Key West Agreement of 1948 and the US Army should be given the 'Hogs as only they know how to best use them.
