They likely can, as I can't see why not. They're just a breed of small cats. Whether or not they have any adequecy at diving I haven't the faintest idea, but that doesn't apply here. If the protagonist couldn't swim, you'd know.
Also, do remember that while I did say there are no "bad" endings, that does not mean that bad things will not happen to the protagonist based on your choices. Believe me, I was sorely tempted to change what I had planned when I saw everyone following the unknown creature without hesitation.
