The 'Spirit of Missouri' makes an unexpected appearance during the Luke Days airshow of 2007. It made a number of passes before departing for good.
The designer, Jack Northrop, was fascinated in the idea of flying-wing designs. His first flying wing was a small-scale version tested in 1940; in June 1946, it flew as the XB-35. 13 were built in total, however only one flew. The XB-35s were later converted to XB-49s which replaced the piston props for Allison J35s. The last of these flying wings was scrapped in December 1953.
Though he never got a chance to see the B-2 fly for the first time due to illness, Jack Northrop was able to hold a model of the aircraft before his untimely death which occurred weeks later.
As of today, 20 B-2 bombers remain with the U.S. Air Force. It can deploy conventional and nuclear weapons; and is the only aircraft capable of carrying large stand-off weapons in a stealth configuration.
The B-2 and XB-49 have one thing in common. Both have the exact same wingspan of 172 ft (52.4 m)
