I've heard some truly amazing stories of what a maistre did when my friend's karate instructor invited her to demonstrate some capoiera to the class. You know you've lost the match when the first thing that happens is that you're flipped upside down in mid-air, and you see your opponent coming in for the next part of the hit before you land.
Gorgeous work, as usual.

Thanks!
And I just love the style. Honestly, I don't think it's a very practical self defense method for most people including me (just recovering from a kick, or from dropping to the ground, is just so slow compared to a lot of stuff), but it's just incredibly fun to move, and have this musical/theatrical component. I did wing tsun style for a little bit and it was so serious; by contrast, I really love how capoeira has this element of play.

I find the personality of martial arts to be an interesting aspect. I briefly trained in historical fencing (as a martial art, that is, not a sport), and the instructor was very emphatic about cultivating an aristocratic attitude of confidence which he likened to European nobility. Perhaps that was part of why I didn't keep it up....
