Just to get this out of the way, Lizanne does not have tail feathers like that. Those crazy tail feathers are a male lyrebird trait. Since female lyrebirds look very plain by comparison, though, most quick reference searches don't turn up the sexual dimorphism in the species. I suspect that DN worked from a photo, and got caught by that snag. That's the trade-off of con commissions. You get to get art from wonderful artists who you might not be able to otherwise commissions, but you don't exactly get rounds of revision. ^_~ That's okay, though! It's still a positively beautiful sketch by an awesome artist (who is very friendly in person), and it's really neat to see Lizanne with so many less-anthro traits and details.
Here, then, is Lizanne with some costume male tail feathers for Halloween. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. ^_~

I personally tend to like things just a touch more toony, but I still do enjoy a realistic style. Just for the record, Lizanne is an adult, and I try to make sure that her personality reflects that. She is short, though, and has a petite build. I know several lovely women in real life who are quite similar to Lizanne. ^^
What's even weirder is even when you specifically search 'female lyrebird' in Google images, there's a SLEW of male lyrebird photos that turn up anyway! doh! >_< One suggestion would be to print out a copy of the character sheet to paste on the inside of a sketchbook. :3 Of course that can really only be done neatly with two characters *L*
Craziness, I don't know how some birds can get around with tails like that!

I had a printed ref that I supplied with the commission. ^^ What I suspect happened, not that I know anything about the artistic process, is that DN went searching for animal references partially because my refs are usually in a slightly more toony style, which didn't quite work for her. However it happened, I'm still quite pleased to have her work. Perhaps as pleased as Lizanne is to have those costume feathers! ^_~
It does seem like an awful imposition on the males, but never underestimate what we're capable of putting up with in pursuit of the ladies!
