General thoughts on the 6th gen starters. :P
Chespin: Well I think it might be a chipmunk... or it might be an unspecified rodent... like maybe a rat!... or it might be something like a bunny (though it's not a rodent...). If so this might be my first choice.
Froakie: If not, this lil' fella is gonna be my pokepartner for sure! Come to think of it, I think Croagunk was the only other FROG... but that wasn't very cute. All the others were more like toads. So yeah, I like the guy.
Fennekin: Everyone else: OMGCUTEEEE Me:... meh. It just isn't very neat to me and rather reeks of pandering... knowing fanboys obsess over the fire starter and over foxes... yeah. Unless he becomes a fire/psychic type it'll fail to make much of an impression on me. Besides, it kinda looks like a cross between eevee, vulpix and zorua .... I just explained half of their popularity. :V Tepig was the first fire starter that I was actually really keen on and I guess I had high hopes for 6th gen's fire pokemon but... nah. Maybe gen 7. :P

I have to agree with you Fennekin was just kinda meh to me, felt like the same thing all over again, I mean we already have a BUNCH of fire types that are canine-ish. Chespin in my pick though just cause I generally like going with the grass starters, but they did make Froakie so damn cute. I hope they don't ruin Chespin or Froakie's evolutions
according to a friend of mine, all the fire starters revolve around the chinese zodiac, charmander line being dragon, cyndaquil line being mouse apparently, torchic is rooster, chimchar was monkey and tepig was of course pig, so.. and foxes technically count as a type of dog or canine. =\ I dunno where I was going with that..

I'll admit that "fanservice" did come to mind with Fennekin, but I thought less "pandering" and more "amends." The Emboar line was, after all, the third dual fire-fighting type starter in a row. So this might be their way of trying to balance things out a bit, both with the starters, and with the general appeal.
Me personally, I'll probably be going with Chespin because, well, it's pretty rare to find a grass type that doesn't strike me as creepy or disturbing one way or another, meanwhile there are a ton of fire / water types that I think are awesome. Though it'll depend a lot on what they do with the evolved forms. I imagine they must be aware how popular Ninetales is, so I doubt Fennekin's line will be a pure fire type.

Well I guess it's the "second" attacks each of them do in the trailer. Chespin's seems like a Dark, Froakie's second move looks like its' fighting and Fennekin's looks... pink and stuff.
