I belive there is a difference between dying in the arms of someone who cares and dying alone in the dark and cold.
Hope she will be able to carry this care on into adulthood and defend it against everything that lies ahead. It is one of the most valuable emotions sentient life creates.

First off nice story. Actually got a good feel for the characters in a short time.
As for not enough detail as in previous comments, I would normally agree if this was in the third person but since its in the first I tend to give allowances. Plus its always a good idea to let the reader fill in most of the details, and I think you gave enough clues for that.
