Not to mention, FiM started as Faust's love letter TO the old series. As everyone is aware by now, originally she wanted G1 ponies as the main characters, but that fell through. So it's kind of silly to bash G1 when, without it, you wouldn't have your show as it is now.
Yeah, I've grown seriously disenchanted with the fandom for various reasons for over a year now. Generation snobbery being one of the sticky points. It's a shame.
Again: Firefly is a damn bad ass.

daaaaang thats a big slap in the face of ignorance right there
when I saw the youtube video "ballad of the brony" I saw how G1 was like and from the look of how it leans to being more fantasy rather than something being exclusive to little girls
it was focus more for girls but as a first generation it actually bested both G2 and definitely G3
in the review it was said that G2 wasn't too bad but wasn't as good as G1 and G3 was the bottom of the barrel due to so many things that just don't seem right like the characters having permanent smiles
when I learned from that video I came to the conclusion that G1 and G4 were the best of the franchise

I agree with this completely. A lot of the bronies in the fandom are asshats who sit around and complain about anything and everything.
I'm not a fan of past generations only because of the art, like I know it was a damn good show, and the characters were fantastic, and I wish the characters of FiM could've been the original G1 characters she wanted to use to be honest!
Anyway, good work! :3

Studio and wow, didn't know that. I know Hasbro for whatever reason has had issues with keeping the rights to names, happens all the darn time in Transformers. Takes them years to eventually get them back. The lost the name of Bumblebee for awhile, but when they got it back my god did we get swarmed with the darn name.
THE G1 series was eh.... It was a lot better than G2 or G3, but it was a pretty average young children's cartoon. THe specials were the part of G1 that was good. A demonic centaur bringing eternal night to the world, a slave-mistress feline keeping an entire race in bondage just so they'll make the drug she's addicted to, then a bunch of witches summoning a lovecraftian eldritch horror that sing bee bop. Yeah. Smooze? Totally a shoggoth on steroids.
I grew up with the G1 cartoons so for me, FiM was a means of allowing me to share my interest without people looking at me funny. I am well aware of the mane six and their G1 counterparts. I think Battle For Midnight Castle in particular is pretty bad ass for its time (I adore Scorpan) and I can't get the damn seapony song out of my head. It really silly when bronies dis G1. I love me some MLP 'n Friends. Tales, however, is more hilarious than anything. Now G3 could have been a lot better.
But every parameter you can measure this on is different now than it was in the 80s. As adults, particularly in a more LBGT and gender-orient friendly decade, we can appreciate the drama, structure and etc. of childrens shows as having themes we would associate with maturity. Because, we are for all intents and purposes, at the peak level of it. Thus, from our side of the bridge, we see only what is realistic and mature, and then we look back down at where we were and see "juvenile and ignorant."
Children see things the other way. Some of the rules of gender and maturity only make sense because your peer group has come to an arbitrary consensus and the one who feels the most significant to express that opinion sets the bar for the whole peer group. As children, there's very little differentiating a male child from a female child but organs, as they aren't exactly swimming with sexually dimorphic hormones yet. Social pecking orders are a thing, as they decide who is who and what their role is in the group. Girls could watch whatever they wanted, because "girl culture" was its own cordoned off thing where anything that was weak or feminine or prissy was acceptable, but girls could also engage in the more 'mature' or less girly media, if they so chose.
Not so for boys. Back in Ye Olde 80s, you were turned into a social pariah amongst boys for liking girly things, because it meant there was something wrong with you. You didn't process information right, and while they'd come to the conclusion if they had the vocabulary that you were sexually retarded, they otherwise just defined the state as "uncomfortably girly for a boy." As far as the pecking order of 'who was strongest' and 'who was most masculine' and 'who was superior,' you immediately lost points amongst the other boys. But you also lost points from the -girls-, too, in two directions. Losing Manly Boy points in one way made you more attractive, as you were considered harmless and less of a threat, and sometimes even taken in as the designated "safe boy friend," which further alienated you from the boy peers, due to being a sissy. But amongst the more aggressive girls, if your peers learned you as a boy liked girly things, suddenly every girl with an inferiority complex was punching you in the face to assert their dominance and dismiss you as inferior, before boys -or- girls. You would be shut down from trying to have conversations with peers with "YEAH YEAH, SHUT UP," or simply ignored. All because of the impression you made, and set precedent for, early on.
I agree that G1 Poniez actually has more of an Old Fairytale quality to it, and all that implies, than the modern day show. It has more bits of drama than one might give it credit for. But you gotta understand where those bronies are coming from. Most of them are between 20-35, before being turned into a social pariah by your peers for daring to glance at anything with "for girls" on it was considered socially ignorant. A lot of the ignorance was accepted as true as a survival mechanism for living through a very ignorant stage of life. And to their credit, for every Smooze or pig sorceress turning ponies to glass, there was somebody crying over something nonsensical and moralistic reassurance it was okay to be so emotionally fragile/expressive. :)

The biggest thing I remember from the old MLP was this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p45XUXM-TAk
I seem to remember things better if there's a musical attached to it. Cartoons aren't so bad back then when you consider all that studios were doing back then and considering the time. There children's cartoons after all, nothing really wrong with it.

When G1 was out, I was 10, and into Transformers at the time. Most cartoons back then weren't good in general, and I would overlook My Little Pony until Friendship is Magic.
(Also, the reason why Faust couldn't use any of the G1 characters save for Applejack is because Hasbro didn't have the copyrights to Firefly, Posey, Surprise, etc. Ah, well.)

I still have my ponies from when I was a little kid. Firefly and Applejack are among the ones that I have, and I can honestly say I dont think I will ever get rid of them. So many awesome memories.. But yeah, they were constantly fighting monsters and bad guys. They were more badass then most people give them credit for.
watched a documentary recently on the subject, and yeah, i have to agree that G1 ponies were pretty awesome, the show itself was dark, had goblins and a sorcerer even! XD But as you go further down that line to G2 thru G4, it becomes more of the frilly tea-party style (even though it was based in a 70's ice-cream parlor where they had jobs and whatnot x3) I think that's what other bronies see, is the happy-go-lucky, fru-fru stuff that a lot of young girl-based shows played on... hell, I wonder if any of the others even bothered to watch G1 MLP XD
I can't say I've personally ever watched G1, but that's only because it was never on over here in the UK, at least on terrestrial TV prior to satellite or cable becoming more available. But I've certainly never had a beef with it or judged it unduly. I can only assume people largely base their feelings on it from their indifference to it as a child, or seeing G3 direct to DVD stuff and jumping to conclusions from there.
And I'm one of the FiM fans (I've never been fanatical enough to consider myself a Brony) who generally prefer the slice-of-life 'girly' episodes to the high adventure ones. Mostly because they tend to be more solidly plotted and make better use of the characters.
ISTS
I'll admit as a Brony myself, I do not have anything against G1 ponies.
Though I will confess that with the current pony generation, once it came to my attention, I realized just how little I remembered of the 80s classic, even though I used to watch it in my childhood. And I'll admit, that's a bit of a shame on my part.

As a boring old collector i have grown really sick of bronies and their complaining about the older gens.
A lot of them don't even have a clue what they are taking about. No, G2 did not have a cartoon. "MLP Tales" is part of G1.
(Thanks for that little bit of misinformation Brony documentary!)
Also, the G3 animations were aimed at toddlers...what sane adult throws a hissy fit about some free online animations and direct-to-DVD movies aimed at toddlers?

Funny thing is, that perception might have partly come from Lauren herself, who apparently never actually watched the G1 cartoons either. A direct quote from the article she wrote for Ms. waaaaaaaay back when this all got started:
"Shows based on girls’ toys always left a bad taste in my mouth, even when I was a child. They did not reflect the way I played with my toys. I assigned my ponies and my Strawberry Shortcake dolls distinctive personalities and sent them on epic adventures to save the world. On TV, though, I couldn’t tell one girl character from another and they just had endless tea parties, giggled over nothing and defeated villains by either sharing with them or crying–which miraculously inspired the villain to turn nice. Even to my 7-year-old self, these shows made no sense and couldn’t keep my interest."

Maybe she based her idea of Firefly on the description on the toy box? Or saw the first special but got disillusioned when she started watching the TV series, which I have heard wasn't nearly as interesting. It'd be nice to get more detailed information on her relationship to the franchise; it's the one thing people never seem to ask about in interviews and such.
Clearly she didn't watch the shows as you say, since that description doesn't fit the G1 show at all. xD
G3? Perhaps. But certainly not G1.
It sounds like she is talking about girly shows in general, and not My Little Pony specifically.
Plus, how can she judge something she hasn't seen? xD

On April Fool's day, the Brony capital of the world, Equestria Daily, pasted pictures of pre-G4 ponies all over their site, to mock them.
Among all the official artwork, they also threw in G1 FANART OF MINE, and also either directly or indirectly set these rabid anti-all-but-G4-pony fans to harassing artists who created G1 fanart and customs.
It was not fun for us. But it did quite frankly show how much of a pile of dicks the Brony community can be when they set their minds to it.
(Note: Not all Bronies are dicks.
But most of them are.
And all it takes are most of them.*)
*South Park joke, not to be taken literally, lol.

I DON'T KNOW.
But I do notice, not just the Bronies do this.
I get comments like, "I HATE [enter series here]" on all my fanarts from time to time.
But I guess since there is such a high concentration of Bronies, it makes them seem more rude/common? I dunno. -_-
For the record though, I do know a lot of awesome bronies, who not only tolerate or ignore the older gens, but I even know some who LOVE them, which makes me happy. :D

Equestria Daily is like the Kotaku of pony sites. Run by idiots, populated by assholes, a poor excuse for journalism 90% of the time, but heavily trafficked because it's a one-stop shop for news and stuff. The pony forum I'm on turned its home page into a news-and-editorials site specifically to try to attract more fans away from ED.
"...a poor excuse for journalism 90% of the time..."
Boy do I know it! xD
They reported that Hasbro's statement in an EMAIL REPLY that the Derpy toy being sold on TaoBao was "Not from Hasbro's current line of toys" meant that it was absolutely a fake, "NO QUESTION ABOUT IT, HASBRO TOLD US, WORD OF GOD!"
...Meanwhile anyone who's been collecting Pony toys knows that what is sold on TaoBao are almost ALWAYS prototypes, and we ALL know that the people who answer questions like that at ANY company have no idea what's actually going on.
But nope, ED was so proud to be the ones who finally shot down that rumor!
...And then it was true.
Oh god I was so happy that it was true, not because Derpy's cute and all, but because it totally proved ED ARE A PILE OF MORONS.

Eh. I think I could let that one slip. It gets much worse. Pretty much every single article they've posted in the last few months, someone on our forum has been able to point out some blatant mistake, from misspelling someone's name to misattributing a statement to, most recently, reporting one of the "Fighting Is Magic" team as having left recently when they left a year ago. And they never correct mistakes when people report them.
You know what, you should probably take a look at the link I posted below too. It sounds right up your alley.

By the way, I don't know where all you currently go for All Your Pony Needs™ and I'm normally not one to shamelessly plug, but if you're interested in a Friendship Is Magic fan community that's friendly towards G1 fans and has a zero-tolerance policy towards fan-dumb, I found one about a year ago that's geared specifically towards that crowd.
I'm just ashamedly non-backwards compatible when it comes to most long running series. I understand that g1 was great for its time...but I still cant sit through it. Just like I've tried to watch old episodes of Doctor Who and I just cant get into them like I can with the modern incarnations. And forget about Star Trek the original series, that's never going to happen.
On another note, the bronies have been getting more and more insufferable...i don't know if its the wrong type of people joining the fandom or just the positive aspects fading away...but they seem to have entered the self-entitled "we're the fans and you're nothing without us" stage of greedy delusion...but in the end I think they'll end up killing this show quicker than any pair of wings and a crown will.

i was pretty active in the community for a few years, then all the bronies showed up, showed their arrogance/ignorance and chased me out. there's just so much negativity and hate towards g1. not to mention, it's just embarrassing (personally) to be associated with anymore.

Wow... I don't quite know how to respond to this. But I'll give it a try:
I watched the G1 cartoons when they were first broadcast in the 1980's and, with the exception of a couple of stories (like "Ghost of Paradise Estate," which featured an interesting shape-shifting character), I didn't much care for it. Which is why I was initially uninterested in Lauren Faust's "reboot" of the franchise. Had it not been for the enthusiastic response to MLP:FIM from a couple of artists whose opinions I valued -- including Technicolor Pie -- I would have given "G4" a pass, as well.
So I watched a few episodes. But that's another story. :)
I think part of what may be going on is that Brony fandom is experiencing the same kind of growing pains that Furry fandom experienced in its early years. Only the whole process has been highly accelerated (It wasn't until 2009 that a furry convention hit 4000 attendees, while Bronycon managed to do it in just one year). Having observed Furry fandom from the beginning, the parallels with Brony fandom -- the challenges, triumphs, conflicts, personalities and drama -- are just too eerily similar.
I'm very sorry to hear that Equestria Daily singled out a G1 fan artist for ridicule -- there's no excuse for that. However, I've met the site admin, Sethisto, and I've had contact, in varying degrees, with other EqD admins, and they seem like fairly decent individuals. I also have had some bad experiences with a couple of my fellow bronies. But the vast majority of the bronies I've met -- at Bronycon and elsewhere -- have been nice folks who are interested in having a good time sharing their love of the show with other, like-minded fans.
This hasn't changed my opinion of G1, 2 or 3 (and the dreaded 3.5), but I will try to keep from "dissing" those older MLP incarnations in the future.

Thank YOU for sharing your comments. There are a lot of things going in MLP fandom that I didn't know about before. And I understand where you're coming from -- my feelings about both the "bronies" and the "furries" are equally complex. In fact, this may inspire an FA journal of my own.
I'll just add that I try to distance myself as much as I can from the "drama" of both fandoms. And as much as I like Equestria Daily, I don't read it on a daily basis, partly for that reason.

"I was a brony before it was cool!"
And yes, I liked Firefly, Applejack and Twilight the most. Just swap in Rainbow Dash and to the last of that order for my modern incarnation preferences.. ;)
*holds up incredibly worn-out copy of 'Rescue at Midnight Castle' VHS from repeated viewings as a kid*

I think G1 is so poorly received because it was so disturbingly horrific. It's not that ponies were using baby talk it's that the voice actors were trying too hard so it sounded like ponies being forced to use baby talk by mysterious eldritch powers. It's not that the ponies were sitting around giggling and having tea parties it's that these poor retarded ponies were then attacked by legit horrifying monsters, and the monsters kept winning! Not saying G1 was fetish fuel, but someone really loved the idea of ponies transforming into nightmare dragons. Even the smooze, the terrible part wasn't that it had a bouncy upbeat song but that the song was so incredibly poorly placed, surrounded by a horrifying ooze with dripping faces devouring the countryside, not something you would expect to break out into a light hip hopping rock tune. Me on Katrina: "Oh look a stereotypical evil villain named after a cat who wait, she's actually an heroin addict. They're actually going there."
You could make a pony show where the ponies were simpletons by human standards and did nothing but sit around giggling and having tea parties, and it would have been terrible, but it would have been less disturbing than G1. It was the juxtaposition of shallow and commercial with what only comes out of the minds of the legitimately insane that had that particular effect. Imagine G3.5 but without the dead staring eyes and the rictus smiling baby faces, another juxtaposition between cute and disturbing that was deservedly lambasted IMO.
"Oh how horrifying Applejack is dragging Megan to the bottom of a watery grave with her dark matter density and flailing about. This couldn't possibly be framed as cute or adorable by anyone with a soul. Wait what's. Wait. Wait what. What."
