The tour guide stopped next to a glass case filled with red satin. Perched comfortably in the fabric was a piece of amber roughly the size of a small child's fist. The visitors looked at it curiously, wondering for a moment why in the world the museum would put a piece of amber on display so delicately. The guide let them look for a few seconds before starting up her practiced monologue.
"This piece has baffled archaeologists for many years. Why? Do you see those little spots in the middle? Those are little bugs, you see. Two of them. One is some ancient species of spider, and the other is an early honey bee. Many would assume that she, a queen by our examinations, was his last meal, but closer inspection reveals that he is not poised to bite, nor is she ready to sting. His legs are instead wrapped lovingly around her, their heads pressed together in some semblance of a kiss, if you're a romantic." The guide smiled here, fidgeting with her own amber pendant.
"Legend goes; millions of years ago, there lived two souls, destined to love each other, but never ale to be together. They are immortalized here, their love eternal.
"Just a few dozen years ago, this gem was on display in a small African village where the custom was, on the full moon and the equinox, a chant would be said as the village members gathered around the small 'lovers'. The chant roughly translates to 'May these lovers holy find each other again and again, until they can live together and finally find happiness.'" She grinned widely, nodding her head to the visitors.
As the visitors gathered closer around the gem, dark fingers twined with pale ones, two silver rings glistening in the museum's artificial light. The woman, much shorter than her husband, smiled up at him, gripping his fingers in return. He kissed her temple and tucked a stray bit of hair behind her ear. She hummed softly, free hand caressing her swollen belly.
"I will love you forever. In
every life I live, I will love you."
Speed paint of the last part of my novel. Yes, I've just finally figured out how I want it to end. It's not going to be very long, but I hear most editors don't want your debut novel to be very long anyway.
This took me about 30 minutes, give or take.
And also, I think I'm renaming my book to something with Amber in the title. Suggestions are welcome!! Love y'all lots!
