Buddy, and Mazz, are both survivors so it kind of seemed fitting to make it Fallout 3 inspired with Mazz as the "Lone Wanderer" and Buddy as "Dogmeat".

Now that you mention it... yeah, sure is a PipBoy. I guess outstanding amazing glowing bits must have become so popular on furry characters that they don't draw my attention anymore. :D
And I think the chinese rifle just is that cheap/minimalistic. I could of course check if it was that way in the Tranquility Lane or Alaska simulations in the game too, or dig in the wiki. But honestly 3 isn't among my favorite Fallouts so far. Dragons and dinosaurs from my home MUCK claim Vegas is better though, so I'll try that one some day too.

Vegas really did add some nice complexities to the game. The rifle also could have that as a folding stock, kind of like this WW2 carbine I remember. I'm probably just speculating on the rifle more then I need to anyways lol. (I do that with a lot of games like this, you should ask me about some of my theories on the Condemned series).
