Practice practice! That's the ONLY way to improve!! I think this is an EXCELLENT first try! You did a great job, especially with adding those darker colors around the pupil. ;3 Here are some tips, I hope you don't mind I went over this image to show you what you can try next time!

Anytime, keep at it! :3 Would love to see any other attempts you make at drawing eyes. I'd practice by following a reference first then trying it on your own.
And on my GODDD last night I had found like a TON of links to different eyes to show you the textural difference in Irises...WTF WHERE DID THEY GO?!? Whatever I shall post them here! Notice the difference in animal eyes and human eyes. Take notice of the highlight variation depending on light source as well as the pupil color - it isn't always a deep black!
