Built on the chassis and mechanics as the Beetle, designed by an Italian Luigi Segre. Who lead the auto design firm Carrozzeria Ghia responsible for designing many different cars from Alfa's to Renault's.

After the design was made the bodywork was built by German coach builder Karmann. Who is responsible for building car bodies for many different companies from VW to Ford, Chrysler, BMW and even the AMC Javelin.
