The Corps - Lieutenant Harker
Lieutenant Harker, the central character of my 'The Corps' comic series, in full combat armour
This started out as me doing a simple sketch to try and nail down the design of the Corps combat armour that will be seen later in the series. I went through a couple of designs, some simpler, some more complicated, but this is the one that seemed right.
After doing the simple sketch of it, I just decided to clean it up, ink and colour it. I think it turned out OK.

I was wondering if anyone would notice the lack of a helmet. :)
I did think about it, and I came to the conclusion that a helmet would pose problems for the Corps. After all, since each species has a different shaped head, with ears in different places, each species would require their own specially shaped helmet, which would be a pain to design, and the armour wouldn't look as standardised and unifom as I wanted it to.
So, to make things easier, I came up witha sci-fi solution (It is a sci-fi story after all). I came up with the idea that the visor, among it's various other functions (there are several), can also create a small invisible force field around the wearer's head, providing roughly the same amount of protection as a helmet. It's an explantion that will be slotted into the story at some point.

Fine job! The shading on the armour looks great, very realistic. Hmm, one thought though: with these anthros there's no covering for their tails. Kinda makes for a vulnerable part of the anatomy since it's not covered with armour of some kind, ie., crushing injuries, laser burns, traumatic amputations via explosions, etc. Oh, and those collars all the Corps troopers wear: somehow bonded to the fur/skin around their necks? A portable tracking device so that individauls can be accounted for/manuevered more effectively in battle? Or is it part of the intense mental programming all Corps troopers go through (the collar's programming keeps 'em all nice and complient?)?
I think it's the same as with the helmets. It would have involved a different shaped tail armour for each species. It would have been a pain to design and the armour wouldn't look as standardised and uniform as I wanted.
The armour probably incorporates a small force-field generator at the base of the tail that is capable of projecting a small invisible protective field around the tail.
When it comes right down to it, I simply prefer it for the tails to be visible. I think it looks better that way. :-P
And the collars. They are not involved in the mental reprogramming (for some reason, everyone seems to jump to that conclusion...) and are not bonded to the skin of the wearer. They can be removed and the trooper would remain loyal and dedicated to the Corps. Troopers are just encouraged not to remove them unless absolutely necessary.
The collars are there for several reasons. They do incorporate a tracking device so that the whereabouts of troopers are known at all times. They also provide a nice place to display rank insignia. I also have this idea that they're the Corps version of dog tags, collected from troopers who have fallen in battle (although that idea is a little nebulous at the moment).
And of course, I just like the look of a guy in a collar. So I find it nice to draw so many characters wearing collars.
