I'll say it right now. "Dragon Ball" is better than "Dragon Ball Z." And even DB was better before it went all "POWER LEVELS" on us. The early series was indeed blatant shonen-pandering, but at least it still had an air of creativity and whimsy to it, taking cues from ancient mythology and stories, rather than abusing cinematic time with non-stop grunting and shouting. Of course don't get me wrong. DB had some rather weird and unsettling moments too. You know how Japan is.
Not to mention the fact that one by one, important characters were tossed aside, until DBZ came along and rendered humanity itself useless. A cast of characters reduced to a series of numbers.
So much story potential, wasted...
One character I particularly liked was the Ox King, who was the first foe that Goku had absolutely no chance of defeating at the time. A powerhouse of muscle and weight. Also, FREAKING HORNED GOGGLE HELMET, YOU GUYS. GOGGLE HELMET!!
Of course, Akira Toriyama wasn't exactly the best with anatomy and refined character design back then...
So here's the Ox King, redesigned by me to look more menacing and bloodthirsty.

The original Dragonball was great. It actually had real stories and action. Not just a bunch of guys grunting to increase their power levels standing around.
There was also a real sense of threat with the enemies Goku faced in every episode of the original DB. Tension is crucial to making an action series interesting. None of that was apparent in DBZ.
The Red Ribbon Army saga is my favorite story of anything related to Dragonball.
