Eventually the Deep Freeze subsided in my Equestria dreamscape http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9893868/ and life returned to a more mundane wintertime environment in Ponyville. Needless to say the weather was still the type that caused most ponies seek indoor activities and our household was no different.
Carousel spent her time either poring over gardening manuals in preparation of starting our own in the garden in the spring, or reading repair and operator manuals for plows. One of our discoveries in the small barn/ workshop on our property was a small garden plow. It was in need of repair but definitely salvageable. It was self-steering model from Steedebaker designed specifically for family or small truck gardens. Most of mechanicals were in good condition but the tack was in serious need of help. Carousel was spending most of her time make in tack for herself.
I of course had my introductory weather pony exams coming up and I was also preparing for my navigation and long distance flying qualifications. Once I had passed those I could start field training along with proper nighttime and low/ zero visibility flying training. Up to this point I just wing it.
Petina had her ongoing magic lessons http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9559164/ which had been derailed by the Holidays and recent events. Also she was continuing to move forward with her writing career and having finished her outline was beginning her first erotic pony novel. Along with that she was trying to line up local businesses for trial tests of her skywriting enterprise which she was hoping start this spring with my help.
Now being located some distance outside of town we don't have visitors dropping by all the time, but it is still not unusual have one of our neighbors like Cogs or Grist drop by for a friendly visit. Even Twilight and Applejack graced our humble cottage with their presence. However I was somewhat to see Rainbow Dash show up one morning unexpected. Since she finished her immediate responsibilities as being my flight instructor http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7159689/ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7245698/ the frequency of her visits had dropped dramatically. What was even more interesting was the fact that she specifically wanted to speak with Petina and Carousel.
Despite her declared intention RD initially just made small talk with the two mares as they sat at the dining room table and partook of rum spiked hot chocolate and cranberry nut poundcake. Eventually though Petina and Carousel were able to decipher the reason for her visit. The prismatic mare wanted their advice and assistance for a very important upcoming event. The Best Young Fliers Competition.
Of course RD was the top winner of last years competition and her sonic rainboom had guaranteed her a place in the record books, but she wanted to do more. She wanted to be a back to back winner something that has only happened a handful of times in the history of the competition. However as the defending champion Rainbow was in a difficult position. She could no longer count on the sonic rainboom to assure herself victory, and she was award the prize last year for saving Rarity and Wonderbolts as much as the rainboom itself. She was superb acrobatic flier but so were many of the other competitors, and she was not as good at the foo-foo aerial ballet stuff as many of the other mares competing. What she needed was something different. Something the judges in Cloudsdale had never seen before. Something ponies attending would have never experienced before. Something amazing. Something revolutionary. Something they'd remember for years to come.
Rainbow Dash has attended and competed in many sporting events over the years, and she had seen crowds really get into a game. But she had never seen audience get as excited about a performance as they do at the Bucking Mare when Petina and Carousel danced. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9850451/ Those two ponies were able capture the attention of both stallions and mares in a way she had never seen before. Rainbow Dash wanted bring that energy to the Best Young Fliers Competition. Would Petina and Carousel be willing to teach her how to adapt their dance style into an aerial performance?
Now Petina needed no encouraging to get her on board. Carousel was willing to help Rainbow Dash but she wanted to make certain that RD understood the reason why all those ponies got so worked up when she and Petina danced. Did the pegasi mare truly grasp why stallions and quite few mares got so excited when they took the stage. Did she understand that if she learned this style of dancing and did it in public that other ponies might think different of her. That other ponies might start taking a new and different interest in her?
Rainbow blushed a bit but explained that she understood why ponies were getting so excited when Petina and Carousel got up their on stage. "Duh, you're both a couple of great looking mares and you're up there swinging your haunches like nobody's business. You make every stallion wish you were their mare for that night, and maybe make a few mares think the same thing. RD blushed even more and looked away when she said that line. The pegasi mare recollected her thoughts and continued.
"And what's wrong with having ponies think you're desirable? Having fans can be a good thing. I love having ponies watch me perform and maybe I'll meet some more cool ponies this way. So will you help me or not?"
Carousel thought for a moment then agreed to help RD. Petina just beamed at RD like a proud a parent watching her foal go off to school for the first time. She told RD in a very Obi-wan Kenobi fashion that RD was about embark upon journey of discovery that would expand her horizons. Petina also advised Rainbow to refrain from discussing her new dance routine with other ponies.
"We want this performance to catch the judges and the audience by surprise as much as possible." Said Petina, "If other ponies hear of your performance they may be tempted to mimic it and that would dilute the full visual impact of your performance. Also Carousel and I will need to see the exact rules of the competition to make certain your routine will not violate existing rules or regulations. Next we will need an exact schematic of the venue to determine to use it to your favor. Finally we're going have to consider possible wardrobe and music for your performance. Hmmm" Petina was now pacing around the table as she spoke.
"Carousel we're going to have start RD on the basics dancing right away. I think we set up a part of the barn for that so we can do it indoor. Also once we've gotten a look at the rules and the venue then we'll need to watch one of your normal aerial routines Carousel and I can consider how to adapt it. " Petina was positively gleeful as she considered the potential presented to her. " RD if you follow Carousel and my instructions this will be a performance no pony will forget for quite awhile!"

RD dancing like Petina/Carosel..
Well not exactly like Petina/Carousel. After all RD can fly so it won't be exactly the same.
you will be drawing this, right?.. Right?!
Well yeah. Do you think Petina would be happy if I didn't? After all her and Carousel put a lot of time in getting RD up to speed.

Should try a nightflyer with this cutie mark:

So how does Petina expect Rainbow Dash to practice aerial maneuvers in your small barn? Dance moves, sure. But are they going to ring a suspension harness and have RD flail around in that? (The exotic dancing I've seen is mostly the result of posture and gesture, so incorporating it into a flight routine would be like picking out the parts of a dance where the performer has enough breath to sing.)
Best Young Flyer Competition? Odd, I got the impression that was a "one time only" sort of event.

Well in my headcanon it is annual event. Also at first Petina and Carousel will just teach RD basic dances moves. Once they have gotten that down pat they will observe RD's flight routines and decide how the new moves can be incorporated into the routine. A discreet location for actual flight rehearsals is something for future study.

I can hear the onrushing disaster, all the way from here. This is going to be quite memorable. Kind of like Discord's reign.
