This one I got given from a friend who got it from the dump when he was working there. This is very incomplete at the moment. It's basically been stripped down by me.
The rear derailleur has a broken guide gear which has snapped in half and the front derailleur is all bent, twisted and split. In my 15 year experience my educated guess would be who ever owned it before me and my friend was riding at some speed when the chain/gears snagged for what ever reason causing the damage. That is pretty much the only way such damage would have been done is if the chain suddenly snagged and jammed tight.

Thanks! :) I have many hobbies. I have just listed my two vintage bikes on ebay, they need restoring which I wanted to do but I have lost interest in them now, I have had one for almost three years and got as far as dismantling it so I figured I'd sell it as I could use the cash anyway.
I still have a range of bikes in the shed from a small three speed "shopper" bike, a Peogeot road bike (old but in immaculate condition and worth more than what I paid for it) Three various mountain bikes minus the project here and a gents three speed tourer.

Yeah and that is after I sold some. I've sold two shopper bikes recently so I had three different ones in total, one I was using to get my groceries on as it had a basket and rack, but I bought a little trailer which was easier so sold that shopper. I sold another because I never rode it. Two bikes are going over to mums so me and her BF can start going on rides round the countryside.
