May just arrived in town. Most people were sitting in the shade of their porches, but May was used to the heat. Blaziken was her best pokemon, so fire and heat went hand in hand. It would almost be too hot outside if it wasn’t for a weak breeze that gave some temporary relief to everyone. May walked down the dirt part of Pyrite town, not really expecting much from the junkyard-turned-colosseum.
She knew that she could handle anything they had to throw at her here, but with every stop she made, a new problem came up. May made a couple run-ins with the native team Cypher, but she handled herself nicely. Team Cypher didn’t seem to pose much of a threat to anyone at those points.
Though, there was one grunt that worried her. He used some strange pokemon with a radiating black aura. That one in particular almost knocked her blaziken out, but she was able to defeat it. Instead of running away, however, this grunt let out a lusty smile when being stared down by the blaziken. He just left the strange pokemon on the ground, and laughed.
May tried not to think about it too much, but every mention of the word “Cypher” sent a chill down her spine. It didn’t help that this city was rumored to have a lot of activity from them either. May promised herself that she would come, win at the colosseum, and leave.
The citizens of the junk village all had that peculiar look to them, like each and every one of them were up to something. There wasn’t a person that gave her a look that made her uncomfortable. May, in her casual red shirt and shorts, contrasted dramatically with the beat up and dusty outfits of the population.
She could be seen coming from a mile away, and knowing that, she bit down on her lip from her nervous thoughts. She would be easy to find by anyone, even that grunt. May couldn’t help stamping her foot in a worried fashion, while waiting for admission into the tournament, and it didn’t help that she was in the most crowded building in town.
She was finally administered in my the managers, and her name came up on the brackets. For a brief moment, May was able to see who her competitors were, but soon, the screen changed to a countdown of the first round. With ten minutes on the clock, May rushed to get her team ready, and off she went to her starting position.
She waited there, plugging in some general information such as her name, and which pokemon she would be battling with. It was a three vs three match, so she registered her blaziken, naturally, her glaceon, to back up blaziken’s weaknesses, and her altaria. She didn’t know why she chose altaria for this, but it just seemed like the time to use it.
The countdown had almost reached zero, and now the butterflies were running around her gut. She was always jumpy getting into a battle, and this would be no different. The timer struck zero, and the platform she was standing on rose to the stadium floor. May was surrounded by a coliseum of screaming fans, and an opponent giving her a deadly gaze.
May threw out her Blaziken typically, while her oppenent chose a shiftry. It was an easy first battle, because her Blaziken’s fire attacks quickly dispatched the grass type. May kept Blaziken engaged, while her opponent hurried to toss out his second pokemon, a mightyena, a dark type. Undeterred by his decision, May ordered her Blaziken to “rock his world” with its fighting type “brick break” attack. Blaziken racked out the blows, and In no time at all, her opponent was down to his last pokemon.
Unfortunately for May, his last pokemon was a water type. She saw a floatzel appear on the stadium floor. The man she was facing had a forced grin on his face, trying to make the best of a bad situation. He ordered his Floatzel to attack, and May’s Blaziken took a vicious hit. It appeared to be almost down for the count, but it still held on. The Blaziken got back to its feet. With a fire in its eyes, and courage burning in its heart, it released a massive “blast burn” attack. Though it was weak against the floatzel, it still did massive damage, and put it out of commission.
A voice came on over the loudspeaker “And the victor is May, and her Blaziken. Beating out Trainer Oswald on a three to one ratio. Let's hear a big round of applause for May and her pokemon.” The crowd screamed for them, and it was nice to her so many people chanting for her and Blaziken.
She put Blaziken back into her pokeball, and was lowered back down into the trainers lounge under the stage. Everyone down there had watched the battle, and they looked at her with a look of either fear or determination. She managed to really wind up the other competitors with her first battle, and she was kind of proud of it.
Holding her head high, she went down the hall, and into the pokemon center. She gave the tray with her three pokeballs to the nurse, who didn’t need to turn around to know who she was. She transferred the tray to the healing table, and gave an uplifting speech to her.
“You did a great job out there.” The nurse said in an unusually high voice “You really know your Blaziken don’t you, its almost like you two were made for each other. How many colosseum battles have you one so far?” May responded “This will be my third one if I go all the way through.” “I have no doubt in my mind that you couldn’t, with such a fine Blaziken.” now the nurses voice got much lower, more masculine even.
The nurse turned around, and May was greeted by a male face with a sinister smile. He took off a wig, and instantly May recognized him. He was the team cypher man. Out of all of them, he was the one to find her again. “Now if you want to see your pokemon again, you will come with me.”
This all hit May like a train, what was she supposed to do? She added up the options, and decided that for the good of her pokemon, she would go with him. The man’s smile only got wider, and he brought her out the back door. An inconspicuous ambulance was waiting outside, and within moments, she was thrown into the back.
She sat in the empty back of the ambulance, while her captor drove her to who knew where. She could only feel the vehicle shaking, and rocking back and forth, meaning a rocky road. She began to cry out of fear, but they left her no time for that. The ambulance came to a stop, and two more cypher grunts knocked her out.
May awoke inside of a steel-walled room, with only a monitor inside of it, and a camera pointed at her. She understood that they were monitoring her, but for what? How could she escape without her pokemon. There must be some other reason, but she couldn’t figure out why she needed to be watched.
The image on the monitor changed from a solid blue to a picture of one of the grunts. “May” he said over the screen “You have been chosen to do a little experiment for us. You see, we have mastered the process of sealing a pokemon’s spirit so they become vicious killers, but we may be able to door more with their minds out the door. Let's just say you are the first volunteer for our operation “reshelling. And who better to become our little lab rat than your pokemon.”
The screen flipped to footage of her pokemon being forced into strange machines. They were resisting, but there was too much violence coming from them. They shot them all with anesthetic, and they went numb, easy to move into the machine. May was horrified about all of this, but all she could do was cry. She was helpless to save those who have saved her so many times.
Again, May was given no time to cry, and the door flung open. Two grunts walked in, and dragged her into the control room. Both bent over and tied her around a post, before walking off. She thought she would finally be left alone, but thats when he came back.
It was that devilish man from the pokemon center again. Still wearing his familiar, but frightening smile. He crouched down to eye level May. “Yes, you’ll make a fine test subject, May. You would make your Blaziken proud, if it was still around. You probably don’t even know what we did to it. Well, we closed its spirit, now its just a little pawn, waiting for some order to do. Isn’t that miraculous.” May was speechless. It was just one heart-breaking thing after another without a pause, and now, she was about to join her pokemon. “Take her away.”
The grunts came back into the room, and untied her. As soon as May was released from her ties, she tried to take off running, but the grunts tackled her to the floor. The picked her up, holding her by the arms and feet, and marched her down a long corridor. They weren’t too gentle with carrying her either, and she was tossed against a wall one too many times on her way down.
They threw her into another room, and locked the door. For some reason the room seemed very familiar to May, and she thought about it for a long time. In horror, she remembered where she saw it before, and turned. Her memory was correct, and inside that room, where machines... machines containing her pokemon.
May hurried over to the machines, and attempted to break them. The metal was far too strong for her foot and hand, however, and she could even make a scratch. May pounded the machine, ripped at the cords, even spit on the outlets, but nothing would work; it was too well built.
Still in a rage-driven fury, May heard an alarm go off from one of the machines, and she actually thought she did something. She walked over to the front, but her heart sank further than it had ever before. Across the top of Blaziken’s tomb, it read “Process Completed” in big green letters. With a rush of steam, the hatch opened up.
Through her teary eyes, May looked up at the emerging Blaziken. It carried a blank expression, its movements were almost automated, even a black aura was radiating from its body. It wasn’t the same Blaziken that was forced in by prods and sticks, but no it was a shadow of its former self. May collapsed to her knees, crying.
The grunt, the one with the sinister smile, reappeared behind May. “Isn’t it magical. With our technology, such a powerful pokemon has turned into a flawless machine. A void of compassion, zero tolerance for weakness, but still, it misses something... Our shadow pokemon lack a need to act for themselves. Without guidance they refuse to do anything... Thats where you come in, May.”
His foot knocked May to the ground, and pressed her to the floor. Shrieking with laughter, with almost a blood thirsty look in his eyes, he only got closer to May’s ear. “You are a great trainer, you proved that to me, and the whole colosseum. You will take part in our little experiment, and your precious Blaziken will too. With its body, your mind, and our influence, you will propel this organization to new horizons.”
He tugged at May’s hair, and pulled her back to her feet. May was only hit by another wave of grief when she saw her pokemon absorbed into a special kind of pokeball, developed by Cypher. The grunt picked up the Pokeball, and walked May into yet another room, this one being decorated with more complex machines than the last.
“This is where our test will begin. Under all of this is a quite simple process. We take the ideal parts of two organisms, and combine them into a new entity. We are going to siphon your mind from your body, and insert it into the empty shell you call Blaziken in here.” The grunt opened a chamber in the machine, and threw the pokeball in. “Now, May, your turn...”
May climbed into another chamber, thinking to herself how any of this could get any worse. The metal door shut behind her, some lights began to flash. The chamber, itself, began to be diluted with noxious gas, making May more and more distant. She fell to the floor, half conscience, but she still heard voices from the outside.
Subjects are in stable conditions, beginning processing of qualities. Mind and body targeted. Extraction process has begun... 10%...20%...25%...38%...55%, but after that, she couldn’t hold on to herself anymore, and she fainted...
“Doctor, Doctor! I think she’s waking up!” May opened her eyes into the blinding light of the laboratory lamps. It took awhile for her eyes to adjust, but she was more distracted by her pounding head. As the light was manageable she noticed that a red beak was sticking out in her peripheral vision. She went to see if it was real with her hand, but noticed that it two was red, feathered, flame patterned, then it hit her. She had become Blaziken.
“Doctor, grabbed the device, we don’t want her resisting.” May looked down at the rest of her body. Thick powerful legs, sharp claws, flaming essences on her wrists and ankles. Every bit of her was the fire type, aside from her head, which was still hers. “May, how do you feel.” Without realizing it, she told him that she was dizzy. To the doctor’s surprise, she was able to speak.
The grunt returned with some sort of gauntlet, that went about up to her shoulder. It was an odd item indeed, probably crafted for some devious reason. “Do you know what this is May, well, this is your initiation. With proper training, you can be trainer and pokemon all in one, but you are not going to stay you, and this will fix that. Doctors, fit her.”
They unfastened the latches of the table, and slipped her arm and talon though the gauntlet. Bolting things shut, and tightening loose ends. It was pressed around her shoulder, and tied to each of her claws. It was odd to be wearing, but May could still never figure out what it was. “Activate it.”
The gauntlet sent a terrible shock up her arm, and all through her body. It was especially bad in her head. “This should be altering the synapsis in your brain to a more sinister approach. You will be just like us in a few moments, May, the perfect trainer, the perfect pokemon.”The currents surged brutally for five minutes, leaving May no breaks, but eventually something snapped. “Welcome to Cypher, May.
