Surmelles are curious creations of both magic and science, being both a ferret, a rat, and something of their own unique creation. They are highly energetic and inquisitive, love causing their own trouble, poking and learning from their surroundings.
In appearance they look much like a stout ferret. A shorter than ferret's noodle body and hairless extremities and portions. They have fairly large paws in proportion to their body unlike their descendant counterparts. Their colorations range anywhere from white, brown, red, orange, or really anything between ferrets and rats. As well as their fur patterns demonstrate the looks of their mixed ancestry.
Surmelles have fairly small claws but a decent body strength and powerful, terrifying jaws capable of biting and chewing through even some flimsy metals. Their mouth is filled with select teeth from their parents- excessive buck incisor teeth and canines, but recessed teeth in between them and to the sides.
With their destructive jaws they have stomachs to match, capable of consuming and digesting a wide variety of materials. Despite this fact, surmelles still prefer the taste of cuisine and have voracious appetites. It is not uncommon for surmelles to learn how to cook and explore a wide variety of foods. With their constant consumption, food is a popular topic among their kind, and naming conventions among surmelles tend to be from food or dishes (e.g. Pickle, Biscuit, Sushi, Noodle).
Being the unique creatures of science and magic they are, it is characteristic for every surmelle to be born with two traits: a mutation and a power.
Mutations often range from minor things like tiny horns, scaley skin, extra fur, unusual patterns, to more overt things like a forked tongue, a barbed tail, or dwarfism. Some mutations might not even be visible, such as an off-colored blood, a doubly keen sense of smell, or the ability to calculate long division in a fraction of a second.
As for latent magical power, surmelles tend to have influence over one, very specific thing. To them its like a magic spell they can always use- like being able to bring around a floating ball of light, cause seeds to grow, or store power like a battery. This power, while magical in nature often tends to be extremely limited, leaving surmelles no real destructive or threatening use of it unless practice and trained like a mage would.
These aren't to say that on their own behalf, surmelles can't be destructive powers of nature between their mischief and creativity.
