In this case, infodump is here in the text box! This is about the core folkin myth of the twin spirits.
Every folkin has a soul, spirit, life force, whatever you would like to call it, which is actually a very, very tiny piece of one of their four gods' power. And as the gods are all dual gods, possessing both sides of their powers, each piece of their power comes in two parts. Two parts, two sibling souls.
Originally, when the first folkin eggs were created, all soul siblings, or soul twins, were hatched at the same time, but by different parents in vastly different lands across the world.
The folkin's natural instinct is to seek out their soul twin, wherever he or she may be, and thus once folkin have passed out of childhood they wander the world in search of their other half.
The sad but unavoidable truth is that folkins rarely find their soul twin within their first lifetime. Disease, accidents and predators constantly subtract from the total population across the world. It is believed that if one's soul twin dies, the surviving twin can tell they have passed.
But once passed, the soul twin does not fade into the world, or return to the power of the gods. Instead, the spirit is reborn as another folkin, and the journey of life, search, death and rebirth continues until the two spirits are reunited.
Folkin who are reunited with their soul twin become noticeably stronger, healthier and resistant to aging, disease and injury. These lucky few are the only ones who have the chance of making it beyond the ancient stage of folkin life cycles, and reaching the legendary land in the sky where the gods are rumored to reside.
The twin spirits MUST stay in each other's general vicinity for their spirits to stay reconnected, and once a pair of folkins have found each other they tend not to stray very far.
Also, even as folkin populations increase across the world, there are still enough souls to supply the newborn folkins. This is because the gods gain their power through worship and belief, and the more folkin there are, the more powerful they become - which means they can give more power out as twin souls.
When a folkin couple has an infertile egg, it is common to hear them or other folkins say that there was no spirit ready to enter the world, or the egg would have been fertile.
Twin spirits are genderless, and can be born and reborn as either gender throughout the course of lifetimes. Also, just because the spirits are siblings does not mean that the two incarnations will necessarily like or get along with each other. Usually if two folkin are reunited soul twins and they do not get along, they will eventually come to at least neutral terms with each other.
Lastly, there are two main opinions/beliefs/behaviors that form the core of folkin culture based off of this myth:
1) That one will never find his or her twin spirit unless they leave their home and wander in search of it for the rest of their lifetime. They may stop in places for brief periods of time, but the life of a folkin is that of an eternal wanderer and settling down will only happen once the twin spirit has been found.
but on the other hand:
2) That if all folkin are wandering about it is harder for them to find each other, and one may be able to find his or her twin by wandering for only some of their life, and then settling down in a folkin community. For if there is one location with many folkins, wanderers will be attracted to the population in their search for their twin spirit.
Both beliefs have their pros and cons. Most folkin can either be classified as true wanderers or settlers.

very cool and interesting : D
my only question is, what happens if two soul twins grow to be middle aged, and one of them passes away and is reborn, would they still search and connect to each other despite the vast age difference?
And what happens once two soul twins reunite, and one passes away much before the other?

In response to your first question: Yes! No matter what age their bodies grow to be, the soul twins will always seek each other out and can connect no matter what.
Your second question raises a good point which I completely forgot to mention: If one soul twin dies after the pair has been united, they both die. Their reunited spirits are separated again and reborn at roughly the same time back into the world. While this can scare some folkin away from wanting to truly connect with their twin spirit, the upside is that they become almost immortal once they have been united.
Also, if a set of soul twins does reunite and manage to survive together until they are old enough to enter the land of their gods, their two spirits are removed from the rebirth cycling.
Thanks for asking! I'm glad you're enjoying this! :D
