Well they weren't compounds, they were what is known as 'Duplexii'; two high pressure engine sets in a single ridged frame. The idea was that two smaller piston sets produced smaller hammerblows to the rail than an equivalent 4-8-4. The NYC had streamlined Hudsons (4-6-4) but they also had S1b's (non-streamlined 4-8-4) known as 'Niagaras' 5000plus horsepower thuroughbreads.
