Fur Affinity will soon be introducing a special "Deceased" status in our next update to honor those in the community who have passed on since the site's inception.
After five and a half years, we've all lost loved ones and those we've care about. To honor their memories, we'd like to setup a small memorial on our Wiki to celebrate the life of those FA users who have moved on to better places.
Please share your thoughts and stories of those FA users who have passed to admin@furaffinity.net, and we will share your memories with the rest of the community.
Be sure to sign your FA username to your e-mail so your memories can be clearly attributed.
In regards,
Fender

RIP those who have passed...
I know some people have complaints about the 'banned' status of those members who are no loger with us.
While I understand the premise behind that, this should hopefully remove all complaints.
haha oh god im bad SORRY ALL
I think I love you. That amused me.
haha oh god im bad SORRY ALL
I've never heard of it.
Note me if you want more information
"... I'm dead?!?"
One thing i thought of... If the user is deceased, how will somebody change their status? :/ inactivity timer? telling a furiend to do this if they die? I'm just a bit confused on that one..
Does this mean the art will become unavailable?
That, is what I find amusing. :3
He was 34 and left us on a Friday, he was born on March 31 1973
He was a genuinely nice guy in a sea of insufferable pricks
There's a certain radiant peacefulness in those types that's really just difficult to shake off
and most trolls have the common sense to lay off of someone once they've died-
they might be referenced or mocked (re: an hero) but you don't TROLL THE PERSON on their pages once they've left unless you
a: honestly believe it's a hoax
b: are honestly a horrible person. (trolls might be unsavory, but they usually aren't horrible)
It's not about trolling the dead person specifically, it's trolling by splash damage really; say your best friend in the whole world died and then here I come just saying all these terrible things, drawing hateful drawings and generally trolling the shit out of any online presence he still had- you'd be pretty pissed off amirite
It's using them to troll as many people as possible and it's most often highly effective
AND NOW YOU KNOW
Like always, I totally support you on this decision. It is a very kind, very heartful, very dedicated and very sweet idea, and I appreciate it a lot. Good luck with it
Well.. not that it'd matter, if I were dead.
i will send something to the account mentioned as soon as i can.
Again, thank you so much! I hope this is something that won't be abused.
But yes, this is a good thing, there are a few artists I knew who deserve this rememberence. ^^
P.S. Would we still see their art if they didn't remove it? I think It be nice how they drew and what they liked to do/ how they think to understand them better. :3
First community I've seen do this kind of thing
yes yes the later the better XD
sorry Death's part of life i' not being negative or whatever but , Sorry , we all gonna die XP
But I agree. It is a strange thought that someone we know may end up like so. Or even ourselves.
Much more appropriate than a (BANNED)
its going to be tough seeing all those fa users...
On a serious note, i think this would be a great idea - it's be a good way to pay honor and tribute to artists in the comm how have gone to that big furry con in the sky (so to speak), so in the words of Jean-Luc picard, i say make it so. :*)~
Hopefully, the staff will prevent abuse of the system.
It's great to see you guys add this feature.
Although... if/when I come across a deceased user... it makes me sad. And I feel awkward going through their gallery. I don't know, maybe I'm just weird and don't handle that kind of knowledge very well.
Regardless of my weirdness, it's a great idea, and I'm happy to see this integrated into the site ^^
Please shared your thoughts and stories of those FA users who have passed to admin@furaffinity.net, and we will share your memories with the rest of the community.
It should be "share".
It's an insult to the dead to have such typos.
...Bad joke? :( Either way, my premise remains valid with those typos, just thought I'd point it out. I still can't imagine people actually dying that were on this site, holy hell.
Great idea, banning the deceased seems a little harsh, even if it's just to lock the accounts.
EVER.
I wish to participate in this!
It's very difficult to make a whole network of people lie about your death, and some will actually declare that you're lying about it if you are.
Oh lord you are so right!
Internet's silly and depraved random attention patterns just amaze me XD
That is something that will not be tolerated.
Say, I wonder if something like that could be added onto the emoticons in possible, like a flower or a candle. *shrug* Just a thought.
http://sigma.furaffinity.net/user/aqb52/
when online =\ Tis a shame too.... I'm not good at discerning context as it is....
I don't know if your icon is part of your statement. But if it is, then iaintevenmad.jpg
/joking
But when you consider the size and scope of the fandom, probably quite a few
We've also had people who mock-died so they can play Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and watch the reactions of people when they 'die'.
The question is, how are you going to verify it, or is it just going to be set up as a flag and anyone can do it?
Great power for reverence, great power for drama.
I see potential for drama fests, trolling and worse, glorification of death.
Im sure people know about the facebook suicide cult in the uk.
People got shrines to them on facebook when they died...then their freinds offed themselves...then family of said freinds, freinds of those...etc
Yes, death and suffering is bad and i Deeply sympathize but I do not pity or try to understand those who does the unforgivable.
To resume: Please avid reporting some Death if ti as a suicide as much as possible or at least do not mention ti is so. No one needs such kind of news. As of natural accidental it's ok. Mentioning some self-committed death just affect those already depressed and such and it's known that whenever a celebrity passes away or commit suicide, the suicide rate sadly jumps. (yes it's horrible , but it's true, like it or not, Human suffering is awful and lack of help make some think there's no way out <=P )
Before talking about some fur's death I feel it would be nice to showcase trying to live a GOOD enjoyable life instead of all the NO-life / Fail at life things misconceptions or moods...There's always some sun after a storm and storms aren't permanent..
;)
Live and Let Live...
Think whatever you want about victims of suicide, I can't stop you. But covering them up and acting like it never happens because it'll make some people feel uncomfortable about it is nothing but cruel. Besides, I doubt they'll be leaving a message saying how it happened, just changing their status to say they've passed on. So your point is moot anyways.
HOWEVER, I do agree that just because someone committed suicide, doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to have the "Deceased" tag. As long as the person is dead, they should have that tag.
good job jumping to insults and personal attacks instead of merely disagreeing, though! You sure are edgy and say it like it is and all that. You get a gold star.
That deserves a second gold star, imo.
But it's just the thought of this that makes a smile go into affect.
I don't think I have seen a site like this bring up this sort of topic.
It's an amazing Idea, and I think I read that someone would like to have some art posted of theirs in also memory.
I think that's a great idea!
I hope this goes over well, (honestly, i think it will xD)
To those who left this world from FA will be always remembered here. it's saddening but, they won't be forgotten.
If not seemingly-hard to enforce because you never really know unless you knew the guy/girl
Otherwise, how quaint. ^.^
I remember seeing a friend of someone come into IRC on their nick and explaining they were in the hospital for a reason.
I love this idea, and I'm glad to see it.
This is a good idea, i hope it sticks
I have a question though: What if a user has simply taken a long leave of absence and the rumors spread, causing people to seriously believe a user is deceased, and there is nothing to prove otherwise?
Would the account be reinstated if the user comes up and goes "What? I'm not dead, I was just gone for awhile/in a really bad accident leaving me a coma for months/taking a break to figure my life out."?
I have two suggestions, though. First, "Deceased" sites should be monitored regularly for trolling; trolls are not above attacking the dead as it upsets those who cared about them. Second, for a similar reason, FA should have a policy for family who want "Deceased" sites removed setting out how they can identify themselves as family. I, too like the aleph as a symbol for Deceased pages.
However, claiming death of an account holder solely to mislead, troll, or garner attention, should have an incredibly steep penalty.
Thinking on the matter, a couple of sites have popped up that notify your online contacts that you have passed on. Considering some people only know each other through the internet, it's not a terrible idea. D: though I don't really like to think about it.
I do know someone who killed herself months ago, but she wasn't a furry or used FA, so I can't suggest she get added to this. I'll be sure to send one in if I ever hear of a fellow member's death.
because on my time on FA i have come across a few banned pages.
and like a regular person i assume they did somethin to be banned, then id leave the page and continue browsing, not even remembering the user
but for all i know some of them might be deceased. and its not a pleasant thought that i may have gone on the pages of deceased people and jus forgotten them because it sed banned
those who have passed deserve to be remembered
Puting a deceased and dear friend in one row with pedophiles is just low! I guess you don't realize we are all mortal and when you are gone, I really wonder wether someone will stay at your grave and cry or just pee on it saying "I'm glad we are finally rid of him".
This is the most wrong place for sarcasm or bad jokes.
But this seems a little... I don't know, grim? I can see some points where this would be offensive, it might just be better to let things stay how they are to avoid any potentially large problems down the road.
And it's impossible to know if the deceased person would actually want that on their profile or not, so I guess there could be disrespect issues for that? I don't really know.
Good on you, Fender and everyone else that thought to introduce this.
I approve of this notion!
It's seemingly a fairly sensible publicity stunt, but it raises the question if someone WANTS his account to be brought to light in such a way.
Imagine your grandchildren found your username in that FA wiki, browsed your page and then it's all like "Spooge inflated and every hole filled with dicks, that is how he will be remembered."
So if someone is deceased, at least delete all his mature artwork/favorites.
and it's true for a lot of people I'm sure, I don't have mature works, but most of my family and friends don't even know I'm into this at all, they already have opinions of it or wouldn't understand.
"Cause of Death" lists would ammount to turning dead into a spectacle. I can imagine people would scour that list for the fur who died the in the "coolest manner" such as having his/her bike breakes give in on a steep incline, get catapulted up over an inconspicously placed ramp near an airbase, vault over a helicopter and into the turbine of an aeroplane, where all that was found of him was a dented dogtag reading "Foxy_323".
I hope that the status is reversible in case of a concerted effort to convince you someone is dead when they're not. Unlikely, but worth considering.
While an obituary is likely too personal a thing to include, will a date of passing be amended to their profile? The first thing most people will ask is of course "Whoa, when did that happen??" and it does keep things in perspective without revealing intimate details.
Also, I would have thought the status would be a good one to automatically have any comments and messages to the account automatically noted to admins for moderation.
I cant find it anywhere ... :(
Is there an example of what an account that has been closed since the owner of that account has passed on look like?
If it can't be shown, disregard this. Thanks.
I think this is what you're asking for.
'Mascot' for Fender's user-account,
and a request-able 'alt'?
"User-account, Alt"
"User, Main acct."
Many people have alts for different-themed art,
but with the addition of Gallery folders, these would become moot.
They would, but then watchers would get that art, which is then a reason for the 'alt'.
Watchers may then un-watch specific gallery folders.
Or simply, multiple galleries per user-account.
User decides if watchers watch all to start,
or if the alternate gallery is 'hidden', and must be added to the watch.
(perhaps a limit of three galleries to begin with, each with their own scraps section and folders.
Scraps section acts like gallery section, sub-galleries with category folders, scraps section with sub-gallery folders.)
Rough idea.
My his spirit live on.
