It's a position I don't envy, and I have no idea how I'd deal with it. I think there's a lot of "blame" to be had but the situation is plainly (like anything in life) not as black and white as people want to make. It's not such a simple thing to yell about, but people want to reduce it to that.
This website has been irreplaceable for the past few years and I think anyone should be immensely proud of the accomplishment that this thing is.
You just do. You deal with it because you have to. You don't fold, bend, and people are going to hate you. They will despise you. They'll misinterpret what you say and take your comments out of context, not knowing the backstory, conversations or other information available.
And they'll go with it, gossip, make rumors.
But you have to look at the entire thing. All of it, and look at how much good comes from the entire site.
DeviantArt just went through something very similar. It's unfortunate, and it sucks, but you carry on.
DeviantArt went through quite a lot and that's the reason this is essentially the most important art site after it. They have tenure and marketing but FA really is an institution and people have made a living off of their work like the they may never have been able to because of the close knit and receptive community available here. Seriously I remember Onta's account when it was dormant for a year with only two pictures on it!
I"m sorry about all the personal bullshit because I feel like it's uncalled for, I don't want to sound like a suckass but this site has and probably always will be important. Do what you gotta do keep it the best damn artsite around (even with all the flaws).
The site's here.. it works. All I care about. There'll always be the self-righteous who'll obsess about others' private lives instead of putting that energy into bettering their own.
>>They'll misinterpret what you say and take your comments out of context, not knowing the backstory, conversations or other information available.
To be fair, Dragoneer, many concerns raised by FA users over the weekend were not taken out of context, but from your own words and actions -- or lack of action.
People have raised points that I would urge you to hear, about security of the site and the personal safety of its members:
Well... it's not like the accusers have never made a mistake in their lives. It's not right for them to be so dickish over a website and a service they're getting for no money whatsoever.
No money... but definite contributions: artwork to share, praise for good paintings, honest criticism, friendships formed and strengthened.
For many of us, despite all the limitations and frustrations of the site, FA matters, and the people here matter even more. If we see them ignored, censored, lied to, or preyed upon, then we get angry.
He's been ignoring the security problems for over three years, instead preferring to imagine some troll conspiracy to destroy his personal web site. He's perfect and can do no wrong in his own head.
you don't "fold" or "bend" because there's nothing for you to "fold" or "bend" on. when you don't actually make decisions it's pretty easy not to "fold" or "bend."
so that's the way you want to play it, then? you reap what you sow.
you don't "fold" or "bend" because there's nothing for you to "fold" or "bend" on. when you don't actually make decisions it's pretty easy not to "fold" or "bend."

Because he's the leader that FA deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll flame him. Because he can take it. Because he's NOT our leader. He's a site owner, a watchful admin. A digi-knight.
It's the same way as the news simply put. You listen to the sound bite of the story and interpret the whole situation based solely on what you are told. You have to experience it and deal with it in order to understand 99% of the time.
You don't really think everything has been taken out of context do you? I mean no offense to you, I have nothing personal for or against you, but some of the shit you said/did was straight to the point and just messed up :/ I'd be more worried if people didn't get upset/worried/pissed off about said things D:
Hi, Now that the 'Knight Journal' is over, I can put my fedora back on.
Really, Straight to the point is what's needed. Any pussyfooting around would really just make 'Neer look worse in the long run, and have people demanding answers and burning effigies.
Like I did mention before. People are getting pissed for all sorts of things right now, so 'Neer might as well be righ to the point and get things said.
As for being direct to Ferality. He wasn't wrong. he COULD have handled things better. But, we're human, he's human, and we're all just animals with morals.
Short version: Shit happens. Best to just carry on ASAP.
When "shit happens" is "has a consistent (many-year) history of ignoring warnings about site vulnerabilities", I don't think it's best to just carry on. But what do I know, I'm just a random ~troll~, right, Sean?
Now ya know how i felt back on YouTube during the troll/furry war days. Any good i tried to do was 'altered' and a mirror universe / bizzaro version of me was created by furry haters. It didn't stop me from being myself. If anything it just made me stronger.
I think i know what could help FA. Get more admins. If 21 isn't enough to read support tickets (because i have some that have expired and never been read), i think either you got some not doing their job or not really here at all. Inactive admins = less moderation being done. They need booted and replaced with people who are ready and able. With how big this site is becoming you really need a staff dedicated to support tickets. It's either that or remove that feature entirely since it is picking up dust.
A lot has come out about this incident, and it's not what most people will think. We're hoping tomorrow or Tuesday. Yak is still going through the logs.
Look on the bright side. If adversity helps to give one a thick skin, you've got a hell of a callous now.
For the record I still don't get a whit of what this hack/compromise accomplished, aside from major inconvenience and some definite loss of privacy. There's something to be proud of.
But too darn hot at this time of the year. Thanks again for not putting tracking beacons on the computers of FA users. No one is mistake free, but that is a mighty fine decision.
I'm sure I speak for many people when I say: I don't care how people broke in. I want to know why the site was not yanked down the second you saw it was being fucked up.
Thank you for not leaving and for putting up with asshats. They fail to realize that bad choices or not without you there would be no FA and thus they would have few better places to go...if any.
Um... no. Dragoneer did not create this site. He wasn't even instrumental in its development. He took over a couple years later when he bought it out. So, chances are, without him the site would still be here, and it's a tossup whether it would be run better or worse or the same.
If he owns the site now and he left then it would go with him. Seriously doubt that if asshats around here caused enough stress he would be the one to disable the site and call the whole thing off. I mean he has put so much of his own money to keep the site going that even if it was left up without him who would put up the money to fill the gaps that are always left behind when "the bills are due"? Honestly, this site is often kept afloat by money out of his pocket alone.
I am greatful you and the Admin are working out these problems. I hope this chaos will end soon. To bad there isnt anything I can do. Sitting here and being patient is making me worry.
okies there are still a few people who are all paranoid that the site is still gonna vanish or something and i wanted to be able to reassure them it isnt happening ^^
I'm pretty much lost on all this. I guess I don't follow enough people to get anything more than just snippets of the drama, so I don't have enough information to make any judgments or decisions about what I've heard (hackings, rapes, terrorists, alien visitations).
If there's a clarification coming to quell the rumors, that would be awesome. In the meantime, I guess I'll sit back and wave farewell to all those who say they're leaving. :3
mightna been good to put up the other parties comment of not blaming you and that it wasn't something they should have brought to you in the first place. It would have diffused much of the 'you are doing nothing' bits people were throwing. The comment was overlooked.
Hope you're okay over there, and able to take a step away from all the shit sometime soon and get back to your real life. May be time for a vacation pretty soon after this D:
*so many hugs*
The funny thing is, the only way for Dragoneer not to have known about these massive security problems (over the few years myself and various others have been complaining about them) would have to be "complete ignorance".
Have you publicly apologized for allowing two people to have their private sexual traumas broadcast in public, yet? I mean for all the explaining you've been doing I haven't seen anything the least bit resembling an apology.
You actually DID apologizing for "misspeaking" when it looked as if you'd told a rape victim to hush up and not cause waves. But it's really low of you not to have at least taken responsibility, as site administrator, for the privacy of at least two of yours users being invaded. You owe them that since you're the one who fucked up.
oh man, I remember you beatin those people to death on lulz
It was like watching a game of Halo, no matter how many trolls and aliens were annoyed with Toonces, and tried to take him down he wouldnt just keel over and die.
>>Have you publicly apologized for allowing two people to have their private sexual traumas broadcast in public, yet? I mean for all the explaining you've been doing I haven't seen anything the least bit resembling an apology.
I have to agree.
I think, Dragoneer, that a sincere apology, a sincere effort to set up clear guidelines for handling these issues in the future, would go a long way to winning back the respect of those women (and men!) who saw that your concern and your empathy were less than they could have been and extremely one-sided.
As for people who use FA to prey on others... you really should face up to them as well. We need a clear way to warn people -- openly.
Thirded. because right now, your actions have left a lot to be desired. There are many members that feel a lot less safe, whether it's been your incompetence in handling the hacking, your lack of anything involving due diligence or notifying your userbase, your covering up the tracks of a dor rapist and interfering with an investigation, and the appalling way you handled rape allegations.
There isn't anything being taken out of context because it's your own notes and your own words and your own actions that are being referenced. If you, the person with whom the buck stops, has screwed up on such a massive level and is publically declaring that not only are your own words and actions that have disapponted being taken out of context but that you are sticking around, you'd better have a damned good reason.
I have kept my nose out of "fur affinity drama". I like it here. I have made lasting, life changing friendships thanks to this community. But the way you've been acting this week has made many others including me, feel less safe.
>>your lack of anything involving due diligence or notifying your userbase
Thank you for mentioning this!
Dragoneer, very few of us are members of that furrydrama livejournal (where, despite your growing responsibilities here, Teahound has offered to make you co-admin), and posting your updates there will not reach us here on FA.
The only prompt information and warnings I noticed here came from concerned people who had nothing to do with administration, yet took it upon themselves to get information out to the rest of us.
If you and your admins could show a similar initiative and concern, I think that you could win greater trust from the people who should matter to you. We're not furrydrama, we're FA.

Exactly. This goes double because the community on livejournal in question is locked, with membership currently closed. So unless you happen to be a member (of which, most of your site userbase is not), you can't even read what you've said.
If it wasn't for concerned friends spreading the word, I certainly wouldn't have know, either. There was no trouble putting out site wide notices about Everyone Draw Mohammed Day or changes to the site TOS and AUP. If for some reason you couldn't have placed a notice site wide or linked to clear-easy-to find place that outlined what was going on, what precautions users could take, and what would be done, then there at least should have been a mass email sent to users. Going forward, aside from showing real, honest contrition, there must be a way outlined for you and other admins to communicate with the site as a whole when problems of this magnitude come up.
For the record, it was Neer's privacy that was invaded. They sent him a note on a site that he owns. At any point in time he could've very lovingly made the matter public by either calling Zaush a rapist or calling Fera a psycho, and no one would be on the position to tell him shit.
Frankly, don't know what some kind of public apology before he knows what he's apologizing for is going to be any smarter. Maybe you missed the whole jest of this journal, but he's gathering the information on what exactly happened, and will make a statement when that's done. But hey. Maybe you're the type of person who wants him to go off, half-cocked and make more dumb public statements. I bet that sounds like fun to you, doesn't it?
I have no clue whats goin on cause i have a life, but hope you get through everything ok. This site is supposed to be for fun for everyone, and people seem to be forgetting that they have a free haven to post art and communicate with others like them, and you who supply it to them somehow is supposed to kiss everyones ass and take the brunt of everyones bitchin. Dont think its fair.
That.... ... that's what y'all consider white knighting? ... ... then who, pre-tell, am I defending? Logic, son, it doesn't flow. But I understand, to an outsider, a lot of buzz-words seem applicable.
I just wanted to say Dragoneer, please dont take what they say to heart, everyone is different, and I dont think wrongly of u for liking what u like, to be honest I like it a bit as well, Im not gonna lie, so ur nothing bad in my book.
People just need to shut the hell up.
I hope everything turns out good in the end Administrator. And with that I take my leave and hope that my comment leaves a positive influence on u.
Well either way were glad to see you deal with stuff as yourself instead of hiding your identity, I mean these hackers feel powerful making threats and acting coy over their mischief, but th dont dare put there god name on the line or bring shame to their name. Karma will catch up with them though.
I suppose this will just have to be an event we all learn from and move on.
7And if thou shouldst be cast into the a pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.
I hope this next explanation is well thought out and re-read before posted, straight forward and lacking in as much personal bias as possible. Let's try not to "misspeak" and backpedal all over the place, mmkay?
Use what you have learned through all these journals that have blown up.
<---In 14 years of admin work at three big ISP´s I´ve seen way way way worse, stay put and stay strong as you are doing the best job you can, there are a huge number of us who highly appreciate that.
Hopefully this won't get any bigger.
I'm pretty much tired of those "FA Doomsday Journals" on my notifications. =/
Just wish you luck with handling all of this mess, 'Neer.
I realise this isn't a popular opinion, but I think some things have been blown well out of proportion.
It might not count for much, but you still have my support.
As everyone knows, I have often been rather.... in disagreement with Dragoneer, FA's policies, and especially FA's choice in administrators.
However, after (thoroughly) reading YiffyLeaks, I actually have more respect for Dragoneer for showing a more level head than the white knights and exhibiting a pro-community attitude over the aggressive dictatorial attitude so many white knights want to see.
It shows true concern over the users, victims, and even predators. The white knights are unconcerned with the repurcussions, and feel the ends justify the means, no matter who else gets drowned in the drama to do it.
FA is Dragoneer...Dragoneer is FA...it is what it has become...this will not change, even if it would be better for FA.
Soon as in...today? Maybe? It's been two hours. You'd think soon would have fallen in that timeframe, but...
I eagerly await to see how you try to explain all this...if you come forward and finally come clean, tell the truth and try to clear the air, or if you continue to throw up clouds of smoke and debris to try and hide everything.
heh, well that's stupid-they should've known better...you should NEVER use the same password for two sites. You should always have a separate password for each of the sites you're on and they shouldn't be easy for the hackers to guess, either.
The site was hacked one-and-a-half-to-two times in a row, something people have been warning him about happening, in between incidents (this has happened before, but without the leaked notes).
Someone leaked 41 user's notes.
Dragoneer made a journal that contained an outright falsehood ("is FA secure? yes!", when the reality of the situation is that they weren't aware of the full extent of the damage.)
You can't suffer two hacks in a week's span, then turn around a day later and say "we're secure, yep".
Of course, if you ask anyone else, you'll hear "LEAVE DRAGONEER ALONE!!!! HE'S MY YIFFY PAL!"
Just wanted to throw my two cents in by saying good luck with everything.
I think you can pull through, and I think that you'll be able to wade through all the comments and hate-mongering to pull this site up again.
Those who left, well, we're better off without them. I, for one, am going to stay, and it looks like the majority of users are staying.
Which I -think- is a good thing.
Anyway, again, good luck with everything, and I'm really happy you're not leaving.
Women on FA would probably want to see that journal: the policies he makes, and the implications of those policies, will most likely reflect issues that were first raised there.
But the damage has been done, thanks to FA's tissue-paper security, thanks to Dragoneer's less than diplomatic approach to journal writing. Word is pretty much everywhere. That's a mistake that people will remember.
What they might not remember is that people stood up to it, and openly called for a new approach to sensitive matters like this one. That makes the journal worth keeping -- if it keeps Dragoneer honest.
Are you planning to become one of them? Seriously, there needs to be a list. Everyone who plans to leave if some major changes aren't promised needs to put their name down on a central list so he knows exactly what he's up against.
Okay, so now my question is "why does that information need to be kept private"? Dragoneer's stupidity directly affected you enough that you need to contact law enforcement. Why are you keeping this private?
Of course, I'm pretty sure he is aware of what his actions caused. I just don't think he cares. He'll just babble some internet meme, say something about how he supports the community, and how everything is under control. Oh, then he'll delete the journal because it makes him look bad.
I'll be very surprised if this isn't the way it goes down.
in short; i dont wanna feed the people and get even more phone calls and more stuff sent to my house because they want to upset me more and get a rise out of it
maybe when i stop panicking i'll throw up a journal to clerly explain my frustrations in a clear, concise, and logical manner.
right now that'd just be a bad idea
Then posting how you got a threatening voicemail via twitter isn't going to help.
You know what works? I know you can't exactly ignore what was done to you, but shutting up about it on the damn internet does help. Talk to police, fuck the internet. You're going to stir up more problems by posting this shit online.
Glad to see you're staying, FA without Dragoneer would be disasterous as who would be the lead manager for it...
You may or may not see my comment among others, But I'm not going anywhere either, lol. After being bounced from various other furry sites, this one one I'll stick to till the end... Even through any drama that pops up.
Anything that's said by anyone can and will be taken the wrong way by someone... I'm not choosing sides on anything, but also am not adding to the drama. It is what it is and just hope things will continue on. :)
erm... no. I actually like Dragoneer (he's friendly, returned my fave once, and this'd me on faf, I kinda owe him)
and WarMock (who is quite possibly the admin who is the nicest of them all and most willing to solve a problem)
Damaratus is also okay but he has his slips (he thought I was trolling once and we got into a little argument but
the misunderstanding got cleared and I did not stop liking him).
I have no problem with the other admins in general.
But there are two or three of them that make me sick to my stomach just when I see their user icons
I JUST CAN'T FORCE MYSELF TO LIKE THEM D:
amen to that. All and all the Butthurt and the Lul-tards just gotta find something to do with their lives :P pretty much like I said in another journal "its like if Neer even farts in a pitch that someone doesn't like they are gonna invent a reason to start the first Furry world war over it"
Wouldn't do what things? Not trying to come off as rude, but do you even know what people were accusing him of? He did do some things, but not everything that people said.
Everyone is more mad about what was revealed that happened in the notes. Not that his account got compromised.
Most people are wanting an explanation for Neer's responses to Ferality about her story of Zaush (I have no opinion on if it is true or not but there are people on each side of that issue), as well as his response involving zoo.
I don't even think it was his account that got hacked; it was someone elses. What everybody is making a big hub-bub about is the notes that were released from most of the admin's accounts, and certain notes pertaining to situations that should have been handled differently.
Maybe you could vomit up the rules about taking people seriously when they tell you your site is vulnerable. Dragoneer might listen to them if they're couched heavily enough in petpets and yiffles.
I think that it is perhaps time to also bring in other people to code. The more coders, the more diverse your coding abilities get, as well as more to sniff out these horrible points ready to exploit before they are taken advantage of. The vulnerability in the TTs shouldn't have happened. In a site where the users and what they stand for is attacked on a regular basis, the users need the utmost security, not swiss cheese code. I worked for a virtual pet site for 5 years, and out of the many hacking attempts, only once did we have real trouble. That being said, we had one main coder (the site owner) and several others who coded and then had a team of other staff look through the code and point out things that were wrong or could potentially be wrong.
And while the compromised admin didn't MEAN to have their account hacked into.. they put a lot of people in jeopardy and exposed a lot of things that shouldn't have been exposed. Do you plan on firing this admin? Because at any other company, the particular personnel responsible would be given a pink slip.
Also, do you know who did the hacking? Was it one person or more? And will you be telling us who, or let them remain anonymous?
You sir/madam, are correct. As a matter of fact, LexyEevee has already pointed out about 20 different holes in the code that could be taken advatage of should someone have the time and resources (and this attack has proven that these people do). I just wish that for once, 'Neer and some of the other admin would listen to what other people have to say besides themselves. A lot of people here have great ideas and could help this site immensely, if you would only take the time to listen.
The code that is FA is quite a hole riddled slice of cheese in that case. Of course people have the time and resources to do this. According to everyone else on the internet, furries are the lowest of the low, and sometimes, I can't blame them for thinking that. This site, its content, and its users are all quite tempting for hackers, simply because we freak the fuck out when something like this happens, going ballistic, quitting the internet, etc. It's a gold mine for drama, and if they can reap such tasty lulz with hardly any effort, hacking and doing this has given them massive jollies.
I think that the admins might listen sometimes. But listening is much different from accepting what we have to say, realizing we are right, and putting the most intelligent decisions into effect. Just because you get someone to code doesn't mean you have to get new admins. You can hire coders, have them code, and their job be done, plain and simple. It's actually exactly what my mate does. It's a job to do, and unless they are looking for permanent coders, freelancers can be the way to do. But I think they need to do a bit of both.
Take your time on getting an explanation done. We know a lot of stuff is happening and it is all time critical. Deal with what you have to - don't stress too much (more) and remember to abuse Sciggles for heaps of hugs and such.
Once all the proverbial 'midden' has finally settled and at least been stowed away then you can go into what details you can; I know a list of affected users would certainly come in handy if nothing else and if there are any actions we should be taking etc etc etc.
I'm glad your still here, though words of advice would be to not be so silent. A list of things that made people of this site so edgy though I might be wrong.
1. The site goes down for from what I heard was 4 hours.
2. All the administrater accounts were changed to regular member account.
3. FAF being down for the past few days. (When is FAF going to be back up?)
4. All the administraters for the past few days being so quiet about it. (We don't need to know the full story before all the information has been gathered, just a quick administrater notice that administrater accounts were hacked and that it being looked into and that any damage done is being fixed or will be fixed.)
I'm kinda wondering if something underhanded is going on, the white knight ratio in this journal is through the roof.
Glad you're not leaving for whatever reason, but I hope -you- type up your own damn excuse, and not just some horseshit yak tells you to say, they're your notes, we want to hear from you. And only you
Did you notice how the "horseshit yak had him say" was a completely different scenario than what he originally posted? The first journal was almost entirely wrong. The site hasn't been secure for at least 3 years. This attack was carried out via known issues.
I just don't want yak to give him something random to say as damage control, I want Neer to man up and explain why he's tipping off animal abusers and such.
Oh. That's fine then. I don't actually give a shit about the notes or their content. I'm just tired of shouting about the technical problems leading up to shit like this, and getting summarily ignored.
couldnt have said it better myself.
i do not want to hear what yak has to say. i want to hear dragoneer come clean. i want him to apologize. i want him to explain. i want closure
That was my thought too. In those journals the collective community of FA was speaking and having the chance to speak, but now it's all gone. Destroyed.
He's just covering the tracks. That way people outside the know won't realise just how badly he fucked up, and will instead just think that big meanies are trolling poor widdle Neer.
ah, the whole rumors going about is so very childish.. wish it would all cut out sometime, but ehh you know people, always getting paranoid, which then causes mass hysteria, well, im glad to see you can keep on trucking through it all
Jesus Christ. I don't get on this site for 3 damn days, and all hell breaks loose.
What exactly happened? All I can seem to figure out is that FA got hacked, and Dragoneer's notes got leaked. Yet I can't find out for the life of myself what the hell they had in them...could someone please enlighten me to this highschool drama going on?

Nice covering your tracks and asspats there bro. I'm GLEEFULLY awaiting your 'explanation' on the situation and how your website miraculously recovered. Also, deleting your journals has had no effect, so you know, 'capped, on the web for everyone to see. Stupendous case of foot-in-mouth.
Poor Neer. I feel for you. I have this kinda of drama about once a year. Maybe not to your concentration but be assured I have been through enough of it to know that time will make things smooth eventually.
Actually the other day I wanted to contact you because I want to make you feel better, but I wasnt sure if sending you a message was a good idea. Either way I would like to do something for you to help make you feel better sooner, if you will permit me that is.
You have the kind of drama where your site gets hacked twice (due to issues known about in advance), in a short timespan, and "loses" the information of 41 users? Wow.
Of course. His little treehouse in the forums and on WYS aren't available for him to get his ego-stroking, and it's too dangerous to leave sensitive information like "we got fucking hacked" out in public.
Explain what? You're doing a great job and if the exagerations are correct then you can continue working and ignore any petty comments until you want to deal with 'em. A good majority of FA will always know you're awesome so you'll have the majority backing you up.
Dude I know your name is Paladin, but getting hacked 2-3 times in a week back to back and flat out lying to the community is not a "Great job"
I know I can't really do better, but his staff has no idea how to handle this and his refusal to let anyone help is also not a "Great job"
This journal is waaay to easy on him, and no matter what Yak has him say, he's going to be called out on bullshit as damage control won't cut it, honesty is the only thing that will
How has damage control failed? I agree that honesty is the best policy, but how has he lied? I'm not being sarcastic I just honestly don't know. To fully argue i'd prefer to know all the facts and both sides before assuming my prejudged view is right.
Allow me: The site was hacked one-and-a-half-to-two times in a row, something people have been warning him about happening, in between incidents (this has happened before, but without the leaked notes).

Does this really warrant 'Neer's defamation? I honestly can't imagine too many sites with higher security than Gawker Media. Besides, a good hacker could probably tear down most defenses thrown up.
You realize that he's had people telling him how to prevent incidents like this for at least 3 years, right? You really think it's no big deal that he's ignored all of that?
I've got a feeling that you wouldn't put up with this if it were gmail or AIM that got hacked twice in a row and leaked 41 user's private messages, especially if they've been told about the problems leading up to the hacks, 3 years ago.
Allow me to repeat myself: these security problems have been known for years. these security problems have gone unfixed for years. If you really believe that what you say doesn't matter just because he's an admin, then you're deluding yourself. You should be demanding to know why security problems have gone unfixed for years.
This isn't just a case of "nothing is 100% secure". This incident is a case of proactive insecurity, sweeping the security problems under the rug, and generally being lax about security. Of course nothing is 100% secure, that's an easily provable result of basic computer security.
Because, just maybe, I give a shit about the security of the site and the users on it. It's more than Dragoneer has done about the problem.
Do you have any idea how stupid that question sounds, by the way? Lemme rephrase this conversation
<pi> I'm angry about the security problems on the site going unfixed for years
<you> WHY DO YOU HATE THE SITE AND WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE???
you are aware that your reputation as a competent(i stretch that) admin is pretty much ruined right? The notes that were leaked pretty much exposed you for who you are
His reputation as a competent admin has always been in question. I've essentially concluded a long time ago that he runs this place like a treehouse and then hides behind fancy titles like 'FERROX ART LLC' because it makes him feel important.
Kinda glad to see people are waking up here, and I thought I was getting through to him when he changed his journal from "Everything's fine!" to what the actual status was. Then he deleted 'em, swept it under the rug as usual.
he won't sadly. even though the evidence against him is overwhelming, people posting in his journal still support him. fact is, if they read the leaked doxs, they would have a completely different opinion of him
I think a lot of users are mad.
Maybe you should be talking to them here rather than behind a selective closed door on the outside.
You're under a microscope now. Anything you do in any of the places you go to may be seen in entirety.
Though I shouldn't need to be reminding you of this.
A large amount of users stand at your doorstep. Within your house should only be staff members, not outside communities. Discuss and investigate among the house, then step outside and offer a clear and lengthy explanation.
A bit of candor in a sea of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) - and some really humorous stuff.. regardless of the funny side of it, because it really isnt that funny in what it all means, I agree with you.
He certainly needs to settle the blaze. At least before christmas.
The hours tick by and the unanswered questions go ignored. All of which are legitimate questions.
I am glad you are still here. That's a spirit for a courage dragon.
For me, I think it's not a big deal. You have right to check anything for safety, and the thing you done is just a little mistake that everyone could do, pushing themselves into the other people's business because of they want to help that people until they got a conflict.
I am not the great artist or famous, but I know I like to post art heree, this is my second home where I could make friends or live as a furry.
So I won't leave this place, I will stay here and won't let those hacker or any bad anti-furry guys enjoying by watching us break this community down ourselves.
God Danmit It's gonna be Christmas soon. Why not prepare ourself to celebrate together just like the last year ?
Reverse Schadenfreude. It sucks, but I suppose I was due.
This website has been irreplaceable for the past few years and I think anyone should be immensely proud of the accomplishment that this thing is.
Good luck.
And they'll go with it, gossip, make rumors.
But you have to look at the entire thing. All of it, and look at how much good comes from the entire site.
DeviantArt just went through something very similar. It's unfortunate, and it sucks, but you carry on.
I"m sorry about all the personal bullshit because I feel like it's uncalled for, I don't want to sound like a suckass but this site has and probably always will be important. Do what you gotta do keep it the best damn artsite around (even with all the flaws).
Toumal is really good at keeping his site stable with few security breaches.
To be fair, Dragoneer, many concerns raised by FA users over the weekend were not taken out of context, but from your own words and actions -- or lack of action.
People have raised points that I would urge you to hear, about security of the site and the personal safety of its members:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1952576/
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1952230/
These issues will not go away until you and the other admins deal with them with greater honesty and transparency than in the past.
I sincerely hope that you can find the strength and integrity to do this.
Mark
For many of us, despite all the limitations and frustrations of the site, FA matters, and the people here matter even more. If we see them ignored, censored, lied to, or preyed upon, then we get angry.
That's a connection that goes far beyond money.
so that's the way you want to play it, then? you reap what you sow.
so that's the way you want to play it, then? you reap what you sow.
It's either that or remove that feature entirely since it is picking up dust.
just sayin bro
No "hacker" is keeping me down!
I love it.
For the record I still don't get a whit of what this hack/compromise accomplished, aside from major inconvenience and some definite loss of privacy. There's something to be proud of.
Honest question man.
You have a wonderful sense of humor, neer.
I genuinely commend you on that.
I certainly do. We always have tomorrow to face, and the day after that.
I don't care how people broke in. I want to know why the site was not yanked down the second you saw it was being fucked up.
Which mod was it? Not going to launch a attack but would go along way to clear pinkuh's name if it wasn't her.
Um... no. Dragoneer did not create this site. He wasn't even instrumental in its development. He took over a couple years later when he bought it out. So, chances are, without him the site would still be here, and it's a tossup whether it would be run better or worse or the same.
If there's a clarification coming to quell the rumors, that would be awesome. In the meantime, I guess I'll sit back and wave farewell to all those who say they're leaving. :3

And hey! That meth addicted hobo is a genius in his very own special way! :P
*so many hugs*
But sometimes with this site it's best if it just passes right by you. I'm quite happy not knowing as long as I have this plate of cookies. XD
The funny thing is, the only way for Dragoneer not to have known about these massive security problems (over the few years myself and various others have been complaining about them) would have to be "complete ignorance".
It was like watching a game of Halo, no matter how many trolls and aliens were annoyed with Toonces, and tried to take him down he wouldnt just keel over and die.
The only prompt information and warnings I noticed here came from concerned people who had nothing to do with administration, yet took it upon themselves to get information out to the rest of us.
I bet that sounds like fun to you, doesn't it?
dont you mean
"oops i didnt read that paragraph"
I suppose my tastes are eclectic. :)
Hope to hear from you again.
I suppose this will just have to be an event we all learn from and move on.
lol God name oh dear
7And if thou shouldst be cast into the a pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.
Use what you have learned through all these journals that have blown up.
You lying to me!!! D;
lol jk
I can't wait to hear the whole story.
Damnit, there go my plans for a coup in the chaos.
Until our dying day, until we're old and grey.." Business -Eminem
I'm pretty much tired of those "FA Doomsday Journals" on my notifications. =/
Just wish you luck with handling all of this mess, 'Neer.
and sad that people are getting so worked up over some of it...
I'm still here.
Seriously, I send you my continuous gratitude, respect and constant praise.
The last days seemed to be a hell of stress for you. (from my point of vision)
its been a mass hysteria on Fa lately..
It will be good to know what has been going on.
I hope things settle down here, glad to hear you're still kickin
Anyone care to fill me in? I get that some idiotic person said they'd hack and slash the site on 11 EST
but other than that, i dunno shiz o.o
It might not count for much, but you still have my support.
Ban me if you must.
I think you can pull through, and I think that you'll be able to wade through all the comments and hate-mongering to pull this site up again.
Those who left, well, we're better off without them. I, for one, am going to stay, and it looks like the majority of users are staying.
Which I -think- is a good thing.
Anyway, again, good luck with everything, and I'm really happy you're not leaving.
take down your last journal, then
Women on FA would probably want to see that journal: the policies he makes, and the implications of those policies, will most likely reflect issues that were first raised there.
It's an important source.
But if all of that shows just where certain attitudes lie on FA, it might be better to know... and to confront that reality head on.
That makes the journal worth keeping -- if it keeps Dragoneer honest.
that means yes. I am leaving.
oops i just leaked my own note
a little bit of life advice: dragoneer isn't the one who needs to know about threatening voice mails. call your goddamn phone company.
Of course, I'm pretty sure he is aware of what his actions caused. I just don't think he cares. He'll just babble some internet meme, say something about how he supports the community, and how everything is under control. Oh, then he'll delete the journal because it makes him look bad.
I'll be very surprised if this isn't the way it goes down.
are you asking why i dont report dragoneer to the PD and simply sweep this under the rug, or are you asking why does my info need to be kept private?
right now that'd just be a bad idea
You know what works? I know you can't exactly ignore what was done to you, but shutting up about it on the damn internet does help. Talk to police, fuck the internet. You're going to stir up more problems by posting this shit online.
I only hope my humble opinion won't get me totally banninated, since the person in question has quite a temper ._.
the only thing you continue to say is "THIS SOCKS WITH THOS ADMIN WORKINNNGGG"
and WarMock (who is quite possibly the admin who is the nicest of them all and most willing to solve a problem)
Dude, I can do that same thing. Would you then "kinda owe me"?
Dragoneer has a long-running habit of sweeping gaping security problems under the rug. This is well-documented. Would you like to hear more?
;)
if you're up to read my opinion, along with the
shitstuff someone else postedMost people are wanting an explanation for Neer's responses to Ferality about her story of Zaush (I have no opinion on if it is true or not but there are people on each side of that issue), as well as his response involving zoo.
I'd vomit back up all the rules about passwords, but I'm sure this has already spoken for me.
I think that the admins might listen sometimes. But listening is much different from accepting what we have to say, realizing we are right, and putting the most intelligent decisions into effect. Just because you get someone to code doesn't mean you have to get new admins. You can hire coders, have them code, and their job be done, plain and simple. It's actually exactly what my mate does. It's a job to do, and unless they are looking for permanent coders, freelancers can be the way to do. But I think they need to do a bit of both.
Once all the proverbial 'midden' has finally settled and at least been stowed away then you can go into what details you can; I know a list of affected users would certainly come in handy if nothing else and if there are any actions we should be taking etc etc etc.
Glad you're not leaving for whatever reason, but I hope -you- type up your own damn excuse, and not just some horseshit yak tells you to say, they're your notes, we want to hear from you. And only you
I just don't want yak to give him something random to say as damage control, I want Neer to man up and explain why he's tipping off animal abusers and such.
i do not want to hear what yak has to say. i want to hear dragoneer come clean. i want him to apologize. i want him to explain. i want closure
When you sweep your old journals under the rug, are you censoring yourself... or censoring the rest of us?
Well?
You have nothing to fear from the past, you know... not if you learn from it.
You don't have to be afraid. You can listen to people, and learn from your mistakes.
No one expects you to be anything more than human.
So you don't have to hide any more.
And you sure as hell don't have to hide from us.

Sheds more light on how this has been an issue for years.
BETTER TELL HIM HOW AWESOME WE THINK HE IS
What exactly happened? All I can seem to figure out is that FA got hacked, and Dragoneer's notes got leaked. Yet I can't find out for the life of myself what the hell they had in them...could someone please enlighten me to this highschool drama going on?
Then a popular user raped another user and Neer' told the girl to not tell anyone and keep it under her hat.
"Man I only pretend to like it to troll people"
Jesus people make me sick
allll of it
juust fantasy

Honest, I've had more fun in that journal then anything in a long time and it broke my heart seeing it gone
Actually the other day I wanted to contact you because I want to make you feel better, but I wasnt sure if sending you a message was a good idea. Either way I would like to do something for you to help make you feel better sooner, if you will permit me that is.
So you'll fill in FD_2 first, but not the userbase of FA as to whats going on, as well as censor and sweep under the rug?
That inspires just so much confidence.

One of the other sides of the story is here: http://forums.vivisector.org/index......pic,432.0.html
Does this really warrant 'Neer's defamation? I honestly can't imagine too many sites with higher security than Gawker Media. Besides, a good hacker could probably tear down most defenses thrown up.
My own humble opinion of course.
