I hope this doesn't come across as an attack on your intentions, but I'm genuinely curious how you plan to go about getting married in California?

It's my understanding that as of right now same-sex marriage is still banned in CA as a stay was placed on the ruling that the ban was unconstitutional. So, getting a marriage license in CA right now is impossible, isn't it?

If it were possible, a same-sex marriage license obtained in California would not be recognized in Washington, and none of the rights and perks to marriage would apply while living in this state.

Washington, however, thanks to the Everything But Marriage act, has civil unions with 100% equal rights to marriage. Insurance benefits, joint tax filing, visitation rights, etc - everything you get from marriage under a different name. You can even call it marriage and have a wedding, the only difference is that you're signing a different piece of paper.

If I'm misunderstanding something, or if you know this and have plans around it, awesome!

First, no it doesnt' come off as an attack or anything like that, and yes it is a genuine inquiry. I will do my best to answer your questions, if I miss anything or don't adequately explain something, feel free to reply to this and ask for more info. I'm kind of an open book. First, The prize is for Florida not California, so I'm not going to get into the situation in that state right now. It being in Florida actually makes it even less Legal. Under current Florida law, same-sex marriages, civil unions, and domestic partnerships are not recognized. So why do I want to win this? Well first, I feel that me and Kits love is just as meaningful as any heterosexual couples. The prize is actually for a celebration and the rules encourage people who are already married who would just like a celebration of their love to enter.

Now as for my personal reasons for entering this contest, I will do my best to explain. I met Stephen like 7 year ago. We started out as friends, but eventually started dating. Earlier this year, while at Disney World, Kit busted out a ring and proposed to me. For him this was a big deal. He has never been big on the whole marriage idea. To him its an antiquated idea. He however knows I've always dreamed of a wedding ring, and a big ceremony with my family and friends. And even though nothing really changed in our relationship after he proposed to me other then I started referring to him as my fiance, it really made me feel closer to him, and was kind of a good way to explain to family and friends how serious we were about each other. Some time after Stephen (Furkitfox) proposed to me, we kinda discussed things and although we could have had a ceremony any time, we kind of decided to wait to have a ceremony until it was legal in the US or at least in our home state of Washington and or until we had enough money to pay for it. Weddings are hella expensive after all. I'm not opposed to having a ceremony before our relationship is technically legal, because to me, what makes us married doesn't have to do with a piece of legal paper. Don't get me wrong its important, and I can't wait till this backwards country gets in gear and recognizes our partnership, but what I'm saying is them not recognizing it makes it no less valid in my heart.

If by some weird twist of fate, we did win, the ceremony itself would be legally meaningless (Much like many "Gay Weddings" in the US, including one I attended in Arizona between two awesome lesbian friends) However, to us, our family, our friends, it would be a chance to celebrate our relationship and would have just as much meaning as any legally binding ceremony. Kit is actually the won who saw this contest and encouraged me to enter. He knows I've always dreamed about getting married and DisneyWorld would be my first pic on location for a ceremony. If we won, we could go sign the papers and get a domestic partnership in Washington before or after the ceremony, but to me, the ceremony would be the meaningful part. (I'm emotional not logical. Kit is the logical science type) Anyways, Kit is my partner. We have been through a lot together, and have been a couple for around 5 to 6 years. If you check on the website a lot of the people who are entering are already married and just want a grand ceremony because they may not have had a great wedding the first time or its to celebrate an anniversary etc. I checked the rules carefully and there was nothing preventing a same sex couple from entering, so I entered us in the blind hope that maybe we might win.

Anyways, if you understand and want to make our day and also be entered to win prizes, then cast your vote. If you disagree with my goals, then don't vote for us. If you really are against this for some reason, then vote for someone else. *Snugs* At the end of the day if I win this contest or not, I have found the worlds best partner and have had a better life because of it, and no one, no the government, no religion, not one hateful person, can take that from me.

Just one suggestion - do NOT get legally married. If you do, and both of you work for a living, the IRS marriage tax penalty will rip you off royally. If you want a legal relationship, visit Nevada and join in a Nevada civil union. Here in Nevada, it gives you every State advantage of marriage without the IRS penalty. No, DOMA doesn't protect you from the marriage penalty. The IRS has published a notice that they will require gays who are married and living in states where gay marriage is legal to file either joint returns or married-but-filing-separately returns.

Man there was some stiff competition for that wedding XP It was a long shot to begin with but I gotta say it was really cool to see the spirit and effort that was being put in to try and help make it happen.
