Tragic, yes; unbelievably... the sad thing is that it happens all the time, just this time it was one of us.

Well, yes, and that's partly what's unbelievable. That it not only happens ALL THE TIME, but that up until it directly affects us, we're totally (apparently) okay with that.

Maybe not even okay with it, but that we just don't care, or assume that somebody else is doing something about it.

Indifference toward human lives is the real tragedy of our times, I think, and a culture that perpetuates that indifference. *sighs*

Now there you'll get no argument from me!

*Shakes its head and sighs* I'm just glad there are some people who aren't indifferent to the lives of others. They give me hope.

I appreciate your work for others here in the community, alerting us so that we might be able to step in with help or with donations.

It's the least I can do. I wish I had enough spare cash to actually donate, especially to something like this.

I take that back, I do get something out of it. I love watching people care about the misfortune of others, even just a little. And so very reliably, we do! People are good, if given a chance.

Know what else? I still believe that human nature is essentially evil, that we really only care about ourselves and act only in our own interest unless trained, (ie. parented), to care about others. (And selflessness actually is a powerful survival strategy, counter-intuitive though it might seem. But try to imagine a selfless baby; we absolutely must be utterly selfish until we're old enough to start caring for ourselves. Then selflessness starts working for us.) So when I see people caring about the misfortunes of others, I see it as an act of will; they decided to care. I'm so proud of anybody who responds to my "please help this" journals, even if it's just with an appropriate frowny-face. It shows that you have good inside you.

I think you quite prove the case otherwise -- that most people are good and decent and will step up to help others, but only if they know there's a need. Communities need people like you who point to those who can use a bit of support, even if it's only someone stopping by to give an anonymous hug.

Maybe. Or maybe most people are brought up right. Anyway, I'm glad I'm doing something useful.

Me, I was brought up horribly- people were mean-spirited, downright evil, in some cases, my mother was a drunk, a liar and a thief, my step-father was worse... and I still ended up empathizing and caring for others- have no idea how, as I certainly wasn't trained to be... I have my selfish moments, like anyone, of course, but I like to hope that selfishness is outweighed by the good bits... *huggles*

Your loving heart is a great thing. Seeing that always cheers me up when I'm low.
